The Cardinal is a 1963 American drama film produced independently, directed by Otto Preminger and distributed by Columbia Pictures. The screenplay was written by Robert Dozier, based on the novel of the same name (1950) by Henry Morton Robinson. The music score was written by Jerome Moross.

The film's cast features Tom Tryon, Romy Schneider and John Huston, and it was nominated for six Academy Awards. It marks the final appearance by veteran film star Dorothy Gish as well as the last big-screen performance of Maggie McNamara.

The film was shot on location in Rome, Vienna, Boston and Stamford, Connecticut.

Robinson's novel was based on the life of Francis Cardinal Spellman, who was then Archbishop of New York. The Vatican's liaison officer for the film was Rev. Dr. Joseph Ratzinger, later to become Pope Benedict XVI. The story touches on various social issues such as interfaith marriage, sex outside marriage, abortion, racial bigotry, the rise of fascism and war.

1963, What a momentous year for J.F.K., and me. Tom Tryon's speech at the very end of the movie, sums up how I feel about the threats that my country lives with now and the dread I have as I prepare to vote in November. Excellent movie and a warning for our times. Thanks for posting . This is my first time viewing. ❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👍

Dang!!! This is quite a 1963 movie!!! Vaguely remember it. Never saw it at 12 years old even though I was being raised Catholic. Most of the cast is gone...may they rest in peace. 🙏🗝🇻🇦🗝🙏

How magnificent was the pre-Conciliar Catholic Church. So many of those beautiful churches were ransacked during “renovation” and their high altars demolished

I think I've felt several times, lack of accomplishment when it comes to helping someone in need... we try to do as much as we possibly can... Lord have mercy! ❤🎉

Thanks....I saw this in its original run...a bit plodding but the best is the opening credit sequence with the shots of Rome. I lived there and know those spots

Preminger drove Tom Tryon to a nervous breakdown. Despite being nominated for a Golden Globe, this was one of Tryon's last roles as an actor. Preminger made some comment years later that "I killed Tom Tryon that actor, and created Thomas Tryon the author, ' something like that.
