I love the simplicity of it. No valves, no pumps, no sensors, no management. It just works.

All I know is that I used to skate the “glory hole” back in the 80’s. It was super sketchy climbing down the the side of the cliff to the opening near putah creek, but hey when your 16-17 year old, you’re invincible right! ✌🏽

So engineers chose to refer to it as a gloryhole instead of something more technical like say overflow drain or spillway vent.

Up at Davis for Grad School in '81-82. Cycled a lot out to Napa and back. Witnessed the Glory hole in full bloom. It was the sound and vibration that I really noticed. Muffled but coming up through your feet. Glad they have that little line of bouys out there, HaHa!

Does the concrete lining of the tunnel suffer from cavitation damage? Particularly around the elbow/bend section ?

years ago..i was fly fishing putah creek just below the bridge, and the store... water was not that high or flowing all to fast... chp came by and told me and a few friend's that the spillway( glory hole ) was about to overflow, , , so we packed up, , walked back to our cars.. and waited a 10/15 mins... heard a loud sound from up the canyon... and pretty quick after that the water went up.. in the area that we were standing was under water by about 4-5 feet of very fast moving water..pretty cool, , but very happy the chp officer gave us a heads up

There's one near Redding called the Whiskeytown Reservoir Glory Hole Spillway. We were camping up there and asked about the name, a local said that it comes from the gold miner's term for a sizable pocket of gold, and the engineering design of the spillway is referred to as morning glory in reference to it's shape, so thus glory hole
