Complete a jigsaw puzzle together
Completing a jigsaw puzzle with your child is a great opportunity to have some beneficial learning fun.
Jigsaw puzzles develop your child's fine motor skills such as, finger strength, as they are picking up, moving and twisting the pieces of a puzzle into position.
Puzzles also develop their hand-eye coordination and encourages them to look carefully at the picture. They need to notice visual patterns, similarities and differences in the piece and relate it to the overall picture.
Puzzles develop memory skills and gives your child the opportunity to plan, test ideas and solve problems. When completing a puzzle, your child will need to remember shapes, colors, positions and develop strategies to complete them.
Choose a Puzzle that is suitable for your child’s age and ability. Bigger pieces are easier for smaller children to manoeuvre and there is more detail on each piece.
Ask questions of your child as you complete the puzzle,
“What can you see on the piece?’
“Does it have a straight edge?”
“Let’s look at the picture, where do you think this piece is from?”
Talk through your decisions as you make them,
“I’m going to try this piece here as it has red flowers on it, and this is where the red flowers are.”
‘I’m going to try this piece on the edge as it has a straight line.”
Try it today.
These are fun activities and games to share with your child.
They will help foster deep relationships and promote cognitive development. They help you enjoy your little one and be a positive influence on their development.
These are activities that I have collected from my years of working in the early childhood space, as a teacher, family support worker, playgroup facilitator, parenting program co-ordinator and a parent.
Enjoy
