What are some issues with pesticides like dioxins and DDT? Can genetically modified organisms (GMOs) be a more efficient way to grow food? Bill Nye The Science Guy gets to the bottom of these questions with comedian Chuck Nice. I cannot thank Bill Nye enough for dispelling and debunking all the GMO myths that are out there. You are doing science a HUGE favor.

I enjoy the "Cosmic Queries" segment of the show and they seem to do a fair job of varying the subject matter, the last few uploads have just happened to be from one of these query shows on GMO's. I applaud the fact that they tackle some very heated subjects and acknowledge that there are more than just one opinion on these matters. Agree or disagree, it is factual information that one can use to form an opinion if one where so inclined to do so, just don't make it your only source for all your information. Remember, we all can agree to disagree without resorting to name calling but unfortunately not everyone will even agree with that 😊 Peace!

Can you tell me how Monsanto is any different than any organic seed company, including ones that made herbicide resistant crops themselves via artificial selection? Those organic companies also often sell "organic" pesticides to go with those seeds, even if they don't have a patent on them (though Monsanto doesn't have a patent on glyphosate anymore anyways, that expired way back in 2001).

i think what Bill said at the end will hold true for marijuana production as it becomes legal in more states, large corporations will never be able to grow the high quality herb that people have become used to as it takes to much hands on work to do so.

I tend to agree with most everything talked about on Startalk, but not so much with the subject of DDT.
I am under the impression that DDT was, and is still, a miracle of efficacy & safety, but has a bad reputation due to inaccurate studying, reporting, plus media hype?

Regulations are non-competitive, and we are currently living in a time period where competition is the only thing allowed by the the 1% richest people because it suits there way of keeping the status quo. We have to find a way of changing this, but its not going to be easy, as the rich make the rules and they don't want change.

Disagreeing with Bill on GMO foodstuffs, organic foodstuffs and market placing. It's unfair competition if companies are so big as a corporation that THEY have the power to decide the pricing of food. They can literally flood a market at the expense of smaller producers, like organic farms.

Next to that Monsanto is responsible for fighting European legislation in protection of an open seed market. So one farmer can at the moment buy whatever fruit or vegetable at the market and produce new fruits and vegetables with these to create even better products. Monsanto is aggressively lobbying to allow copyright upon foodstuffs so they can realise either a monopoly within this specific market or rule out any chance of fair competition. This is done through TTIP, the free trade agreement between the EU and the USA, which the citizens of the EU are demonstrating against for years now. All this is morally and ethically highly questionable for both the EU government and the corporations alike.

Hey I was wondering, is it possible that the process of fossilization increases the size of the fossil so... Dinosaurs were really normal sized beings. I know this is wrong in some way but I would like to know why? ( I came up with this when I realized I had never seen a dinosaur fossil smaller than a large dog, and that raised the question.

I got an outer-space question. What is the opposite of a black hole? And I don't mean white hole --- I mean in sophisticated astrological terms --- what is the opposite of an infinitely dense point of matter?

"Organic." will own the high quality market or the premium market, and the GMO, will grab the lower end market. GMO's could be seen as a not premium product and definitely would be cheaper to get, while the "natural" idea of organic, will grasp upon people who are willing to pay, to get a natural, well cared product.

I get tired of the market place talk. The only thing businesses care about is maximizing profit in the short term. That has long term consequences.

In before accusations of Bill being a crazy Libertarian who worships "the free market".

I have no idea if he is or not; I'm just predicting comments to come...
