Everything around us is made up of a variety of elements. When you heat something, you are essentially providing energy to the atoms of the substance. Some of the energy is absorbed, while the remaining is released. This released energy is what we see as flame. Moreover, varying amounts of energy are released depending on the element, which brings a different colour to the flame.
As a result, the flame of sodium is yellow, the flame of calcium is red-orange, and the flame of potassium is violet-red.
