The modern conception of "separation of church and state" bears little resemblance to the intention of our Founding Fathers and the true American tradition. Ryan Turnipseed joins me to discuss the history behind the incorporation doctrine and how it became a weapon to drive Christianity from the public square.

I remember when the Bible was taken out of the regime schools in the deep rural South. Even teachers who were SBC members began to be afraid to mention the Bible or anything to do with Christianity. My dad saw that the jig was up, and put me and my sibs in a Christian school. It was 1973.

In Greece, there is no secular state. The ministry of education is the Ministry of Education and Religion. We say morning prayer everyday at schools.

Great show, Auron. This is exactly where you need to be, making complex right-wing concepts digestible to normie conservatives. No more punching right on Twitter, it's not the role you're meant to fill. Keep up the good work, we will always praise you when you do.

Seculars understand "separation of church and state" to mean "Christians can not exist in a political capacity as Christians". In reality, it was intended as the opposite - to protect the churches from the overarching reach of the state, which has historically (and continues to be) far more of a problem.

To the so-called seculars should theoretically be conpletely unconcerned with separation of church and state, as they supposedly have no church to protect. However, they aren't.

If seculars were viewed as a church, this church's members would vote more unanimously on every single political issue than any existing church.

I'm of the opinion that separation of church and state does not and cannot exist. The question should be "which church is most aligned with the state".

Ok... Let me make it simple enough for anyone to understand in one minute.

The separation of Church and state is a separation of powers. The civil authority wielding the sword is separate from the ecclesiastic authority determining which acts are evil. It is a structure purposefully designed for checks and balances. The Church bears no obligation to declare that any act prohibited by the state is a guilty act (sin), and the state bears no obligation to use force to prohibit every sin.

Through common law structure, mutual nullification protects our liberty. A defendant may choose a bench trial or a trial by jury. In a bench trial, the laws of the state will apply without regard to morality or justice. In this, the state can prevent punishment for any act declared to be a sin (guilty). In a trial by jury, the jurors are sworn to give a true verdict. As the state bears no ecclesiastic authority, the state cannot convert any innocent action into a guilty act (sin). Through the jury, the Church can peacefully fulfill its obligation to protect the oppressed and prevent punishment for any act declared to be illegal.

@13:00 I'm amazed. Ryan mentioned the Puritan coup in MD. That's the first time I've heard anybody but an academic mention that affair.

People conveniently forget that state churches were a thing in the United States until the 1830s. The official state church of Massachusetts was Congregationalist until 1833. There is nothing in the constitution that explicitly prevents a state as opposed to the federal government from having an official religion.

It really doesn't matter what the founders intended, because at the end of the day, they were rebelling against Catholicism. The worldview of the founders was never going to be sustainable.

so does this mean that the second amendment was never intended as a guarantee of personal, individual firearm ownership, at least as a federally protected right?
