Joe Cocker - I Who Have Nothing

"I (Who Have Nothing)" (sometimes billed as "I Who Have Nothing") is a song originally released in English by Ben E. King in 1963.

"I (Who Have Nothing)" is based on the Italian song "Uno Dei Tanti," (English: "One of Many") with music by Carlo Donida and lyrics by Giulio "Mogol" Rapetti.
"Uno Dei Tanti" was released by Joe Sentieri in 1961. The English lyrics for "I (Who Have Nothing)" were written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who also produced the Ben E. King record using the backing track from Joe Sentieri's record. Some critics believe that part of this song's melody was later copied for "Nights in White Satin," released by the Moody Blues in 1967.

The song was included in the musical revue "Smokey Joe's Cafe".

I, I who have nothing
I, I who have no one
Adore you, and want you so
I'm just a no one,
With nothing to give you but oh
I love you

He, he buys you diamonds
Bright, sparkling diamonds
But believe me, dear when I say,
That he can give you the world,
But he'll never love you the way
I love you

He can take you anyplace he wants
To fancy clubs and restaurants
But I can only watch you with
My nose pressed up against the window pane

I, I who have nothing
I, I who have no one
Must watch you go dancing by
Wrapped in the arms of somebody else
When darling it's I
Who loves you
I love you
I love you
I love you

One of my most-loved singers since my got better and better with some of the most emotional songs ever on his wonderful albums.  I'm thinking in particular of "Night Calls" and "Have a little Faith", both so special after his "The Legend" hits of his earlier known greats.  There seem to be so very few "man"-singers right now; everyone of the younger generations have been into "boybands".  Husky, gravelly voices are a rarity and an absolute gem when discovered!   Zucchero...Chris Rea...Rod Stewart et is something that catches the heart....not only in male voices, either..e.g. Kim Carnes, Bonnie Tyler, Tina Turner.  Perhaps these vocals become more appreciated with age of the listener as they realise what they have have missed out on or maybe it is simply that the musical frivolity of youth in time gives way to a deeper sense of something more meaningful !!?....  Admittedly there are lots of great songsters out there right now but I wonder how many will endure for many years ahead as those mentioned and more besides from time past...let's face it, all the above have truly been "someone special"..(Rod?)...because of their songs and voices, not their looks or "celebrity".  Anyway..back to Joe....  This song is just beautiful and is simply one more gorgeous addition to so many other lovely ones that arose from the heart-achingly nostalgic, unforgettable songs he gave us in the '60s.

who hasn't covered this classic? Almost all are terrific. Shirley Bassey also does a definitive cover. But so does Cocker, and Tom Jones. Got to see one of Cocker's last shows in PHX. So glad i was there. One of Leiber and Stoller best tunes of many. Man, they knew how to write hits.

The first version I heard was Shirley Bassey singing it in the 60's. There is also a french version. All of them are dramatic and moving. thanks for sharing.

Do women really think this is romantic?.... or would they prefer the guy with the diamonds who could take them to fancy restaurants? Because that's what it seems like.
