I too was caught up in this for almost 10 years. When my memory started suffering from an auto-immune disease I decided to strengthen my mind with scripture memorization so I took to memorizing 2 Peter. Little did o know that reciting it over and over I would see the lies that I had been believing from my ARC church for years. You shall know the truth and the truth WILL make you free! God’s Word in its totality is the only truth!

The dilemma for many who routinely sit under eisegesis and narcisgesis teaching is that they are deceived into believing they are continually learning the bible and growing in understanding when they are s biblically illiterate s they were when first becoming a Christian. I had a friend who had sat under TD Jakes for years and excitedly explained to me how Psalm 91 related to unpacking a suitcase and letting go of personal baggage. She truly thought she was exegeting the scripture. Whenever I simply related back to her a passage while giving it proper contextual meaning, she was amazed and acted as though I was a prophet. I'd then assure her that I was doing nothing special-- just repeating what the scripture actually teaches in context rather offering my personal interpretation. Each time I did this, my goal was to reveal how a false interpretation only superficially encouraged her while even personal application drawn from a rightly divided passage actually inspired, nurtured, and strengthened her faith in God in unfailing ways.

We can say, "Read the bible, " but that can mean different things to different hearers. HOW we learn God's Word is just as important. Many are not accustomed to reading more than a verse or two at time in a devotional context with a writer explaining meaning---usually relating it to a story about themselves. Scripture then becomes just a series of disconnected sound bites. They don't understand that scriptures unfold and RELATE to one another to reveal Christ and His salvation plan because that's not how they were taught it. The concept of simply reading chapter by chapter, book by book, allowing scripture to reveal truth using God's intended meaning with scripture clarifying itself through Holy Spirit illumination is foreign to them.

I find such encouragement from this spiritual truth:

2 Corinthians 3:18
And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

Yes, we should draw personal application from scripture, but that application should inevitably draw us to Christ, not to focus more intently on ourselves. ❤
