Steve (and Alex) being the last humans (other than villagers, which would be a different species of humans anyway) could be considered extremely endangered, and so since they're extremely endangered in minecraft, they were added to real life.

Funny enough Axolotl are only critically endangered on the wild, there is almost no axolotls left on their natural habitat (the Xochimilco delegation on Mexico City) but their population on general (domestic axolotls) is REALLY big, (like bigger than ever has been) and not at all endangered, you can even have them as pets.

“Fun” fact: When axolotls are stressed their gills are pushed foward. Thats what you see here when you put an axolotl on land.
I kind of like that they added this little detail. If only they make them take damage when on land like fish because they never should be out of the water at all.

Speaking of endangered animals, mojang should add something like a lion or cheetah so that savanna biome looks less hideous. They would be great addition for wild update as well.
