5.3 Chevy Failed lifter/Retainer causes a PO306 misfire code

Truck came in for a misfire and checking for codes only a PO306 for cylinder 6 was present, testing found the coil , spark plug and coil wire was good. The fuel injector passed testing and no vacuum leaks were detected. We performed a compression test and found low cranking and running compression on cylinder 6. We received permission to remove the valve cover to inspect further and found one rocker would only move once or twice then stop moving. Knowing this engine has active cylinder kill for disabling cylinders by removing the oil pressure from the lifters to save fuel we needed to check the valve train and oiling system. The solenoids that control this were all working (these are in the valley area of the engine) So next we had to remove the cylinder head to gain access to the lifters and their retainers. What we found was the plastic type retainers had failed and was allowing the lifter to rotate and damaged the cam and lifter. (sorry no video of this portion of the work)

Simple fix. Tear down and unstick lifter. Reassemble and purchase the Sprint chip from Jegs. This prevents it from ever going into 4 cylinder mode which causes this problem. I've bought and fixed dozens for under $500
Including Chip from Jeggs

Hello I'm getting a p0301 was your vehicle making a loud taping sound that followed when accelerating. I have replaced plugs and wires. And still the same. Also spark plug 1 was the only one that was wet with gas. 07 Tahoe 5.3 .
My next move is ignition coil, then fuel injector on cylinder 1

Did it still run ok. Cause I believe I have the same problem on a 2009 Silverado runs ok but has a miss. Changed the fuel injector and coil no change

Today I heard a loud pop and it sounded like an exhaust leak and dropped code po307 and sure enough misfire on cylinder 7 and a ton of oil was getting into the cylinders as evidenced by the blue smoke coming out of the tailpipe. I am really afraid on this one that although it's under warranty I want this truck to be trustworthy as this is my third Tahoe.

Thank you for the video. One question: i have a 2009 gmc 2500hd sierra year 2009 6.0 liters with 140 k miles, and was told by the dealer they found roughness in rocker arm from worn camshaft lobe causing low pressure on one cylinder and they said to replace camshaft and lifters. But another shop said it was just better to just order another remanufactured engine because there is no point in putting new lifters and new camshaft into used worn out engine with worn parts that might be failing also or that might start to fail. What is your recommendation? Thank you
