Second home APOCALYPSE. 8 Most Expensive Towns in Cornwall, UK

Welcome back to Turdtowns with an episode of Poshtowns. Today we’re in the the capital of second homes in Cornwall UK. There are more second homes here than anywhere else with 14,000 properties sitting empty. This has destroyed communities and left young people unable to afford to buy. Cornwall has just been ordered to build 80,000 new homes which seems impossible, can they do it? With most of these house prices ranging from £600,000 to £1,500,000 it seems harder than ever for the locals.
100% council tax on second homes doesn’t seem to be helping so what can be done to save these Posh towns from completely disappearing up their own backsides?

As a Cornish tradesman, I can say that these days, it's not so much second homes. It's gone way beyond that now. Those buying up the seaside town and countryside properties in Cornwall are large hispitalty and financial investment firms, not individuals who've done OK.
Done a lot of work for buyers, sellers and agents round here over the years. Dealing with an individual/owner or family where these sorts of properties are concerned is increasingly rare.
Adding this comment as, you need to understand a problem to stand a chance of fixing it. "Second homes" is now misunderstanding the problem. More insidious than that now.
Great video though. 👍

Whenever my elderly mother saw a fancy house she’d mutter “drugs money” under her breath.
I was born and lived in an old fisherman’s cottage in St Ives back when people actually lived there. We had loads of friends and it really was a wonderful early childhood with the whole town, its cliffs and its beaches were our playground. Way back in the 60’s.

22 years trying to get home now. From St Austell and rented a room in Polperro for a bit.
14, 000 empty 2nd homes. 24, 000 Air BnB, 7 private rentals. No jobs.

Your monologue at the end of the video is so spot on. I truly hope that the youngest generations, like today’s toddlers, will grow with better values. But I wouldn’t hold my breath.

I live and work in Truro. I walked from Penzance to Mousehole a couple of weeks ago. It was a Saturday, beautiful weather, and yet i found myself being one of maybe six people in Mousehole. I knew that Mousehole had become notorious for second home ownership and that it's dead during the winter, but damn, that brought it home.

I live in St Ives, at the back of the town is the social housing, which we are lucky enough to live in. Could never afford to buy a place here and our kids have gone to Uni and then never returned due to the lack of decent jobs and obscene levels of rent, if you can find anywhere, buying is way beyond us and them.

A Cornish family has moved into the Welsh village I live in. Literally Parents, 4 daughters, 1 son plus their spouses and children. It certainly helps the local schools.

When we go to all the Cornwall towns on holiday we play ‘high street bingo’…they all have exactly the same shops!…

Mountain warehouse
Rolys fudge
Fatface
Saltrock
Sea salt
Tarquin’s gin
Trespass
Flapjackery

You’ll always get at least 4 of these shops in every town.

It’s a truly riveting game I know.

The sense of humour on all these films is tremendous.

Have a coffee. I like your videos; as someone who holidays in Cornwall, Devon etc I do feel part of the problem. Keep up the good work, nice to put a face to the voice.

We left Cornwall in 2023 and now live in Somerset. I was born there and lived there all my life. Sadly finding an affordable 2 bed home was beyond us. I ended up with my son and partner squashed into a 1 bed flat in Helston with my son on the sofa or a camp bed. Both my parents still live there and being elderly, that's extra stress as I'm not close anymore. I like where I live now in Somerset. Cornwall is rather cut off from the rest of England, especially the further west you go and yes, it's that dead in the winter. I'll always miss it in ways, but I wouldn't go back.

i couldn't agree more, my partner worked so hard serving his country in the Navy for 36 yrs, and it was our dream to retire here in Cornwall five years ago.
It was along exhausting search to find a home we could afford, and in the end we had to settle for a small bungalow in a tiny hamlet.
House prices are horrendous here, and now half a million wont get you much. We are so lucky to have one home, any one with two is just taking the piss,
it makes me fucking angry that so many places are taken over by the wealthy, time for a peasants revolt i think. Not sure what the answer is other than high taxation, but like you said they can afford it. Sorry about your drone, sounds like one of my shit days LOL. Brilliant job with this one, as a Cornish resident i loved it. Looking forward to your next video.

Really felt for you in Polperro! It's so sad what's happened to these places. Your take on where we've got to in society at the end was spot on. Things need to change.

Thanks for coming back to film more of our beautiful county. Yes it's a shame there are lots of empty houses in Cornwall but many locals cannot afford to get on the housing ladder 🪜. Very sorry about the seagull getting your drone mate hope you were able to recover it. Right on me beauty 😍
