About The Guest:

Alex Honnold is on the podcast! Who? The guy that free handed Yellowstone? Close enough.

Seriously though, this was such a great interview. We talked about his two most epic solos that nobody heard about, near misses, lessons from other climbing legends like Tommy Caldwell, Jonathan Siegrist, and Peter Croft, pooping while free soloing stories, how the film Free Solo exceeded his hopes and dreams, the commitment to excellence, and much more!

Alex describing in 2 climbing experiences more excitement, fear, dread and near death than most people experience in a lifetime!

Only Alex can fall 10 feet with an abyss below and say it was an adventure lmao

I’m a mountain biker with not much interest in climbing but I follow Alex religiously as he fascinates me through his humbleness, grit, and heart.

HUKIT.

Man climbing into 5.11 unfamiliar terrain solo is just such a wild concept.

I'm so glad he's still living. What he does is amazing and extremely dangerous. Many have not survived

[Most mind-blowing story of death-defying climbing ever told]
“Ok… but you said there were two stories?”

I had a small manzanita bush save me after I fell on the death slabs under the Regular route on Half Dome - I slipped on some sand on the granite slabs & my haul bag was so slippery I just started accelerating towards a 200' cliff. The bush was about 50' from the cliff and it stopped me, but I kept breaking branches and ended up just hanging from a green branch until my friend lowered a rope and I was able to get back on safe ground. Adventure!

The last story with the friend sandbagging him is so funny 😂

I read the thumbnail as “My Bush Saved My Life” and thought Alex had a giant bush like “yeah, probably”

The fact that Alex can climb at all with those huge balls is legend

Normally you might think a guy telling stories like this is embellishing facts. But this is Alex Honnold. And the movie starring him Free Solo can’t be captured in words.

Great content; anything you survive injury free is a great adventure. That is old school climber mentality. Totally accepting that death is part of the deal was normal.
Into the 1970s: one in ten climbers who went to the " Greater Ranges"; died. And most climbers aspired to go there.
And climbing mags had a regular obituary section that had deaths of usually notable climbers on a monthly basis.

Finding those sheep tracks was cool. Happened to me once in the Sierra where it dumped over night in a place I was totally unfamiliar with. I got bear tracks and it moved me right where I needed to be. Not the best strategy to rely on but, like Honnold said, kinda' magical.

I can relate. I fell off a ladder into a bush. Lol. Seriously though, I would’ve been f’d up if not for that bush.

I’m a full blooded aboriginal from north Canada. And when I went exploring through big rapids and small rapids with my boat and motor I saw an eagle at almost every rapid there was over 10 rapids I had to go. I was exploring and travelling to another reservation community by water. In our culture, birds sometimes give off warnings or a spiritual guide for us. Basically that’s our guardian angels watching over us or our ancestors as we like to call them. I almost tipped over at one big rapids but luckily I had enough horsepower in my motor. That is why we respect all birds and animals. They give food, comfort, and guidance.
