It's what used to be called a transfer caboose, a convenient mobile office for crews transferring a string of cars from one railroad to another. With consolidation, much less need for transfers, but this is a handy rolling office for a local crew, thus kept around. Our local local uses a regular caboose. Often next to the engine for convenience.

It's rare to see a caboose on the end of any train now. Wow. Awesome to see Thanks.

Another question is why it is very rare to see a caboose at the back of a freight train like it used to

Yup!! Transfer caboose, but what is the Original The GREEN BAY AND WESTERN had similar cabooses across Wisconsin, and here in G.B. they were used when switching the paper mills on the East side by Quincy St., (N-S), and the tracks ran E-W parallel to Eastman Ave., with the red ALCO Diesel on the East End to push cars in and out of the mill then the small Transfer caboose protected the back when backing West, and sometimes the Conductor used the small air whistle for signals for grade crossings, or warning kids trying to run across the tracks after school, then backing across the Fox River rotating Bridge, and connect at the C&NW Interchange by the North Broadway Tower, next to the Mcdonald Transfer switch, and on rare occasions in the 1980s they used to get both rr ALCO switchers side-by-side, HI IN feb. 2023 ad.

I actually caught a train with a caboose not too long ago passing through Fort Mill, SC, just a little bit south of Charlotte.

Missouri Pacific used this type of caboose. Been a long time, but it is class C-11. Steven

If you want to hopefully see some good caboose action, the Cater Parrott Railnets Valdosta-Willacoochee sub in South Georgia may have some good action. They used to use some as buffer cars on their trains.

2 months ago, I saw a
"BURLINGTON NORTHERN"
"CABOOSE" (GREEN of course)
on a Northbound "B.N.S.F" train.
That was the first time I've seen of those since I was little.
Talking about a:
"TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE".
🤔 I often wonder since they don't hardly ever use them anymore:
What are they doing with them,
Because when I was little:
If it was a train,
You automatically knew there would be a CABOOSE on the end of each train passing through.

A caboose with a office for the conductor.
Including a desktop computer. In Europa normal in the cabin of the electric locomotives. Greet from Zandvoort the Netherlands 🇾🇪🇺🇸.

I'm not a CSX fan so I don't know much about their caboose configuration (I'm a N&W fan). It's weird that it's in the middle of the train. What else is weird? I'm curious!

Shit, when I was a kid, those were the ones that shot rock salt if they caught you on the tracks
