If you have a rash like this, Read this!
1. 1-5 Cafe au lait spots on the body are common, and they may be present like birthmarks. Cafe au lait spots are flat, that means flush with the skin, not elevated. And they literally mean “coffee with milk.” so that should be their appearance.

2. They are normally present with 0.3% of Caucasians, 0.4% of Chinese, 3% of Hispanics, 18% of African Americans. There is no study to say the prevalence of this with Indians, but it will be in the range of 1-18% based on above results.

3. Having a few (<6) on your body, each measuring max <1.5cm across, is absolutely fine.

So if you or your loved one has this, don’t worry, because most of the time they are birthmarks, but if multiple of them are present you can get it checked out.

Signs of Neurofibromatosis 1

1. ≥ 6 café-au-lait macules > 0.5 cm in greatest diameter in prepubertal patients and > 1.5 cm in greatest diameter in postpubertal patients.

2.Freckling in the axillary or inguinal region (having freckles)

3. ≥ 2 neurofibromas of any type or 1 plexiform neurofibroma (A large outgrowth from the skin)

4. ≥ 2 Lisch nodules (iris hamartomas) - Small nodules in the curtain of the eye (iris)

If you have this, then it’s best you get it checked out by a dermatologist. They will do further tests to confirm (genetic testing & Radiological testing)

About Neurofibromatosis 1

1. Life expectancy of people with NF is almost normal. With the right education, people with NF can live a normal life.

2. This condition causes benign tumors most of the time, but the benign ones can very rarely turn malignant, so even though it is nothing to worry about, we have to be vigilant.

3. There is no treatment that can reverse NF1, its signs and symptoms can be addressed. Tumors, in particular, may warrant chemotherapy, radiation, surgery or a combination of treatments. In about 60% of people with NF1, symptoms are mild and can be monitored without the need for treatment.
