in my opinion shane is absolutely most rewarding friendship in stardew, but pursuing a romantic relationship with him to me felt like a sad but accurate depiction of why Romance is not always a good choice for people in addiction recovery

Shane was clearly written to have his arc end at 10 hearts as a non-bachelor, and then CA changed it at the last minute without letting it reflect how his character actually should be l

Even a tiny change like turming beer into a hated gift would do so much for his character I feel, because it would indicate to the player that he's trying to improve and doesn't appreciate them trying to get him to relapse

This is literally my wifes journey with shane. She Likes him up untill he stops trying.

I really hope ConcernedApe changes his dialogue after the new big update. I was really hoping that he would have some signs of improvement after I had married him.

Although, I did follow him during one of his out in town days, and when he was drinking what looked like beer near the river, he said “dont worry, its just a joja cola”, so theres that I guess

What's strange is that I distinctly remember a cutscene where he switches beer for sparkling water.

tbf he's trying to quit cold turkey (as mentioned in certain dialogue in-game) and quitting an addiction that way usually leads to really bad withdrawals which do often cause relapses

Tbf I'm married to him and he often does work on the farm and has his own coop and chickens he keeps, saying when he says he wants his ashes to be part of his chicken's feed and go back to the farm. His 14 heart event shows he WASN'T drinking when he said he needs a cold one, it was Joja Cola. He DOES still drink and he owns that but he's never super drunk or doing stupid shit. As someone who's struggled with mental illness i like that he isn't simply immediately cured after one therapy session.

I really like Shane. Most villagers have really interesting stories but I like Shane in particular because his actually gets pretty dark. He first seems like this jerk but you realise he’s tired of his life and even thinks about ending it there and then. Seeing him improve in certain cutscenes was really nice and, even though some cutscenes kinda show him going back to his roots, I still think he’s cool.

At least we can all agree that Clint is the real worst villager

The one thing that made me switch how I feel about Shane is the fact that he clearly cares for Jas a lot even if he’s kind of a deadbeat caregiver.

It took me a long time to realize that Shane is the one who has custody of Jas. I have to assume his problems started after her parents passed, other wise that was a bad choice on their part.

Shane reminds me of my brother's struggles with alcoholism. The first time I found Shane nearly passed out near the cliff, I had to stop and cry because it hit too close to home. Now, I always pursue friendship with Shane, so he can get the help he needs.

I understand everything, but in my farm he does a LOT of work.. he takes care of my animals, he takes care of my cat, he fixes my fences and when I had crops in the farm, he would also take care of them and we've been married for 6 years <3

This is why I can never make it far in Stardew Valley. The furthest I ever made it was summer 2, and that was on my first ever farm. I’ve only ever completed the craft room of the community center. The usual cycle goes as follows:

1. New farm
2. Vow to choose someone other than Shane
3. See myself in Shane and feel sorry for him
4. Attempt to fix Shane so I can indirectly fix myself in the process
5. Date and marry Shane since he’s the first person I reach 8 hearts with and I can’t resist the temptation
6. Disappointment sets in and makes playing Stardew an unpleasant reminder that I’m still depressed
7. Stop playing Stardew for several months
8. Repeat

I’m currently on step 7.

I love shane his arc is well written and his 14 heart cutscene is amazing, i hate the i can fix him argument because he fixes himself but then you get to his room and dialogue about beer after the cutscenes show that he has quit

I use a mod called “immersive characters — Shane” that adds some new lines, changes beer into a hated gift, and keeps his sobriety after-marriage. Now I really like romancing him. I need a mod to fix that horrific spouse room though

I hate hate hate this take. The idea that because he isn't 'fixed' then he isn't trying. He goes to therapy. He drinks soda water. And yes, he relapses. He is a realistic depiction, and he doesn't necessarily have a traditional "happy ending." The fact that his arc shows improvement, even if he isn't "fixed" and is still in a dark place doesn't mean he isn't worthy of support or love. The fact that his room is messy, he has days where he can't get out of the house, he still eats microwaved foods. I feel him. I love how he is so grounded. The man is raising his god daughter, for fuck's sake. You don't get a god daughter in your life through a happy tale.
