The original Canon C300 came out in 2012. Is the camera still worth it over ten years later?

The reason clips are split up is because of the compatibility of the card media and it’s file storage system - FAT32. Cards back then didn’t support EXFAT and any files recorded maxed out at about 4GB, due to the file system limitations. Once cards supported exfat those limitations went away.

Also watched those same Vice Guide documentaries and studied their camera setups, the original C300 was by far one of the best cameras of the era and glad to see it still getting some great use!

I'm still shooting with the C100 M2 and it's a great camera, but I envy the C300 M1's higher bitrate. I can deal with my 420 8bit color, but I know it would have considerable more detail if it had even 50Mbps vs the 24Mbps it shipped with.

Ordered one from eBay. If I like it I’ll probably get one or two more. Seems perfect for simple studio shoots where I don’t need 4K or crazy DR. Hopefully it turns out great and we’ll do some nice unprofessional “corporate-ish” stuff with it.

The split clip thing – if you import with the Canon plug-in (XF Utility) it recombines the clips. Anyone who worked with the camera new how to import from it. Its only if you drag the files straight of the memory card through MacOS/Windows that you run into problems.

I bought one used about 6 years ago for $2000... best purchase! The image that comes from this codec is flat out amazing and yes 4:2:2 gives enough ability to tweak. BTW I did many shoots with ISO 5000 and the grain was very very pleasing. If you're just starting out as a videographer, pick one of these up.

I thought the first ciname camera was the XL1 and XL2. By the way before comming across this I was going to get the XL2 as I think it is enough for someone with creativity and love for shoots. They filmed the 28 Days Later with an XL2 and I think it turned out amazing.

One of the best cameras I’ve ever owned. Got it for a good price and still use it all the time. It’s very easy to use and the results are great.

Owned one not so long ago and still absolutely amazed at the colors and even the performance in low light. This truly is one of the biggest bargains if you don't need 4K. And as you said you can probably get away with upresing it anyway and you get better ergonomics and battery life than a lot of mirrorless cams.

Thank you for your review. It was too the point and very informative. Purchasing my first professional grade camera this week. I've heard lots of reviews on the Canon C300 and you just sealed the deal. Thanks! Hopefully we can collaborate on a podcast or just mention each other, I will definitely mention you.

Good review. I've seen the footage from this camera and it's remarkable. The early Canon cine cameras were workhorses, very reliable with great feature sets - I think this is why I think people are so loyal to them - just hard not t like. I shoot on a C100 M2 and I wish the poor codec had a higher bitrate like the C300 M1, but like you said, get out a shoot a compelling story with WHATEVER camera you have!

Loved this vid. Energy + details were a nice balance.

I used this one back in the day and loved the files coming of it. My employer later replaced these with Sony FS7, which I never really liked. Sure, the Sony files were 10-bit 4K, but the files graded so much nicer and easier.

Yeah I actually might grab one of these as my Bcam for my podcast.

I'm considering this as an affordable A-cam to complement my R7. If I need autofocus or 4K, the R7 has me covered already while the C300 would handle everything else. Not that a client ever asked me for 4K deliveries.

I actually just bought one for $320 plus shipping and eBay fees. No screen or xlr but still very useful and great colors.

For $900 or less, hells to the yeah! I remember how much of a big deal that camera was when it came out. The $13k price drop was a major controversy. haha!

Great videos!! Looking at getting something similar a c100 m2 or the c300 mk2 for my studio / documentary beginner stuff.
