Region 2297 produced a major X2.2 solar flare peaking at 16:22 UTC Wednesday (3/11/2015). The event was responsible for a brief R3 level radio blackout and is now in a good position for Earth directed eruptions. The flare was associated with a Type II radio emission with an estimated velocity of 1461 km/s indicating that a CME is possible. In this video by SDO, plasma is seen leaving the flare site and is likely directed away from the Sun-Earth line. Coronagraph imagery is required to determine a possible Earth directed component. More updates later this evening.
