Sautee Nacoochee is a few minutes from Helen and the Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia is well worth visiting. The area around Helen is beautiful and as you enter Helen from the South, the rock and mineral shop is worth visiting. I almost forgot, when my daughter was younger they had a spider museum in Helen. We have a photo of her with a tarantula crawling on her arm.

I’m I. Helen now and I’ve been here so many times. Thought I’d look and see what everyone else thinks the best spots are. The coaster is awesome! I do recommend you stop by the Hansel and Gretel shop for some awesome fudge, truffles and other sweet delights.

Helen is where my sons grew up with visits to a friends chalet. My sons feel it's too far for a weekend, and go to Blueridge, GA instead. Me? I go to Helen year round, and I always will. There is no place like it in the Southeastern US.

My husband and I just got home last night from Helen, GA and your video is spot-on. We did everything on your top 10 in just a couple of days. Had the most wonderful time in our Rented cabin in Sautee Nacoochee which is less than 2 miles away. We loved Unicoi State Park too. Enjoyed your recap and look forward to more since I subscribed.

I wonder if there are many shops and restaurants actually open the first part of the week. Many towns bows don’t come alive until the end of the week. But we prefer traveling earlier.

She said the hike up Anna Ruby isn't strenuous, I had to take a few stops. At some point you are on a straight up incline. The lower portion isn't strenuous, but you will know when they falls start going upward!!! She also didn't mention Sautee, Ga. It isn't to fat down from Hardmams Farm. It Is worth the drive and visit. They have a country store, sandwich shop, lavender cottage, candle shop and more. Further down is a covered bridge and creek, perfect for a lazy day of rock sliding, swimming, picnicking and just relaxing! Not to mention the park, our kiddos have loved playing in the small park!

I recommend visiting Helen for Octoberfest (Sept-Nov) at least once. Don't miss the Festhall activities.

After living in the area for over 10 years now, here are some not so nice things to consider.

If you plan on drinking more than ONE beer, I suggest staying in town and walking as there is only one way in and out of town and DUI checkpoints are common.

Do not park illegally as you will be ticketed in a matter of minutes.

This may seem strange but the chance of being a victim of a violent crime in Helen is 1 in 78 while the chance of being a victim of a violent crime in Georgia in general is 1 in 254. Watch out for pick pockets when the sidewalks are crowded.

Realize that Helen is filled with cheap trinket junk stores, overpriced restaurants, and is no more like a real Bavarian town than Myrtle Beach is like Venice Italy. Realize those things and you will have a good time.

To be honest, I don’t think I would come back to Helen again. We went to Helen for the Thanksgiving holiday. We checked the restaurants beforehand and almost all of them said they are open until 6, 7 or 8 PM. So we didn’t even stop somewhere else thinking we will go eat at the town and experience local food. Of course it’s thanksgiving but thinking at least some of them are open. When we were actually at the town, it was literally disaster, people all over the street looking for a place to eat whatever they can find, but no restaurant is open. The signs at the restaurant say open, on google map they say they are open, to figure it out whether they are actually open or not you go from one restaurants door to another while some of the restaurants locals were having private dinner. You can see they are eating, but the door is locked. I was so pissed because it was only two of us but there were families with kids trying to find a place to eat. And all locals were saying “everything will be open tomorrow”. So starve tonight you’ll eat tomorrow. There was only one bar serving pizza and I think there was at least 30 people waiting outside because the inside area couldn’t handle more people and at some point you give up waiting. It was a total disaster and we ended up getting food from a gas station and eating at the hotel. You are a town attracting tourists on Thanksgiving, at least update your hours on google map and your signs at the door that’s the first thing you do when you close or open a restaurant. And the local saying everything will be open tomorrow like a joke… No thank you.

Also a Hot Air balloon race takes place in Helen every year in the Spring. Race to the Atlantic. If you pick your weekend right, you can watch dozens of balloons take off the morning of the race.
