In the 19th century Fur traders soaked pelts in solutions of mercury nitrate to preserve them. which led to widespread mercury poisonings among tradesmen. Tremors, Rashes, Twitching, Vomiting ,and delirium were common side affects due to exposure of these toxic materials, especially among those who used these pelts to make things like jackets and hats, thus terming the phrase.
