The Hanneman Problem

Heyo! This is my first attempt at getting some Fire Emblem: Three Houses content onto the channel, thanks for checking it out! I'm hoping to get a ton of feedback from this one so I can work on improving other similar videos in the future.

So, Hanneman is in a weird position in 3H. He's got a garbage 20% speed growth and is outclassed in Mag growth and spell quality by many of the students (cough cough Lysithea and Constance) that you'll be investing into heavily over the course of the story. However, he's one of the very few mages to have a boon in Bow, which gives him a very unique class path, allowing him to opt for a great Sniper build instead of trying to be a crappy knockoff of other characters.

Funnier thought; as a Sniper, Hanneman doesn't even need to use a Magic Bow to get kills for a bit, especially after getting Hunter's Volley. There's a reason Sniper is one of the best classes in the game. It'll work wonders for anyone.

Another oddity is how he has the Crest of Indech. Which can grant a Brave effect when he uses a weapon. Except… Mages don’t use weapons. I love Hanneman, but I feels like they had two different teams design him.

The problem with Hanneman is that he’s not an axe user

I am so thankful I found this video. I personally get bored sticking with every character's canonical classes and love branching out into something unconventional whenever I have the chance, so I'll have to try this out next time through! Thank you for sharing everything so excitedly and concisely: it helps educate players like me without making us feel belittled. Hope to see more from you in the future 👍

Cool vid man, thanks for uploading. I’m on Azure Moon right now and I’ve kinda already got my recruits for this run but when I FINALLY do CF I’m gonna use tf out of Hanneman with this build. I’ve always liked him as a character since my first playthrough in Church route but I’ve never used him cause everything I’ve read says he’s underwhelming on maddening. Justice for Hanneman

There's a lot of other ways to get hold of materials. The DLC for the Abyss makes it easy to get additional items. Also, on new game + you can make him powerful immediately of you want.

Will never forget the time that Hanneman leveled up and absolutely no stat leveled up. Nothing. I was so mad

It takes a lot of investment, but War Master is a very good class for Hanneman. Quick Riposte guarantees he doubles as well as the Aura Knuckles keeping his damage output at absurd levels and the Bolt Axe for ranged options.

Swordmaster Lysithia after nabbing dancer's +20 Sword Avo and a forged levin gave me a similar vibe. Ignoring the conventional logic of class lines and going by stats makes for some weird builds.

I wish lances had a universal magic option, though. Luín isn't enough.

Hey, hey! This is a great breakdown. Very informative and you come from a place of clear knowledge.

I'll have to remember this when I play Maddening. I'll also have to uhhh... get around to finishing FE3H.

Hanneman doesn't have speed problems. He can double armors just with the warlock base speed, and that's all a mage ever needs to double really.

Bow Hanneman is nice for memes but passing up on Meteor isn't something I recommend.

Wow I bet he overkills stuff by a lot. Magic weapons/combat arts are a lot of fun. I love nuking things with Lorenz or Annette.

For me, I focused a lot on his speed, making him a brawler first, then a swordsmaster for speed and strength, giving him lots of speed boosters, and finally making him a trickster so he can use weapons and his magic and it worked a lot for me when I uses him.

This will prove useful to my maddening faculty only run.

This build is pretty good overall and maybe even the best if you are determined to throw large amount of gold at him since HV isn't a cheap combat art and it the linchpin on which his viability is predicated. Seems an awful lot of work in the early game to fish, play with cats etc just to make a sub-par unit break even haha.

I would like to add though that movement+1 may yield more consistent gameplay results as stacking crit won't be very easy because your options for mag based crit boosting battalions are very limited, if not crimson flower bound then you may only have mockingbird thieves.

Overall this is great if you are dedicated to using Hanneman because you like him. This build isn't very Hanneman specific as Lysithea with her mastermind ability can slightly compensate for her lack of a bow boon, plus she hits harder.

That being said, I love the vid and it makes me happy that these discussions are continuing and evolving 😁

Silly thing was in my first playthrough I made Hanneman a monk.

Thanks for sharing this. I’ve never had luck beefing up Hanneman. Might try this build next time.

Even as someone who is not super invested in Fire Emblem, really interesting stuff man!
