Considering A Magnolia Tree?

Magnolias are in bloom where I am and they are beautiful! They are also messy and this client had just cleaned up this area the day before and she was getting ready to do another round and she was frustrated by the mess. (Note: since I'm in the northeast this is not the type that are more commonly found in the south and those are different.).

They can get up to 30 feet tall and wide so keep that in mind when you are planting.😮😁

Whatever organic matter you can use the better. It all goes back into the soil and provides great nutrients to your soil. It’s also less work because you don’t have to put them into yard waste bags and cart them somewhere. The same goes for pine needles, leaves, grass clippings and bits of perennials and annuals you cut back.

Whenever I see people raking or leaf blowing leafs into plastic bags to put in the rubbish bin, my heart hurts. Nourish that top soil by letting it decompose and feed so much life! Glad for videos like this.

Magnolia trees are beautiful and smell so fantastic. When I walk my dog, I always stop next to a magnolia tree and breath deeply, reluctant to move on. It's a piece of heaven here on earth.

You could also lessen the creation of the "mess" by harvesting some of it before it falls. Magnolia petals are edible and can be eaten fresh, cooked, pickled, or dried. The flavor has been described as like clove and ginger. Younger petals directly off the tree are generally the most palatable.

I’m a southerner and never seen that magnolia before. I have 4 16 year old jewel magnolias, they are huge, and my favorite ornamental tree. The flowers leave their beautiful fragrance behind!

Careful with magnolias right next to a paved or concrete walkway. If you step on magnolia leaves they get mushy and, depending on the weather, can become very slippery. Could be hazardous, especially with elderly neighbours.

Hell yea gurl!!! Keep it going!!! The soil will eat those up! I have 100ft wide fence maybe 25-30 ft tall that is covered in wisteria and alll those tiny little petals fall right into my beds and compost pile, i came out once thinking “someone dumped all these flowers in my compost bin?! “ 😂

As someone whose neighbors have a similar tree, don’t wait with cleaning it up. It gets brown and slippery and really hard to get off you tiles

Get em early before they fall and make things out of them. They’re great pickled or used in salads/salad dressings, made into tea, cookies, I’ve even seen people stuffing them like grape leaves.
