This was the most polite, respectful "argument" I have ever listened to.

Please! please! please! keep Jordan Peterson on the Youtube. The hysterical laughter he causes me is fantastic for my chronic depression. He is the best straight-faced comedian since Buster Keaton. And his daughter acting like an inflatable doll is a double act

Success is one thing, being happy while healthy. You can have a trillion dollars. If you aren't happy or healthy, it's worthless. 💯

The problem with Biographies is they need to sell. Why would you write one unless there is an interesting story to tell. Interesting stories have conflict in them, so a biography is likely to focus on the conflict.
Plus human memory can amplify feelings over facts. 🤷

Not love. The key is trust. If you believe that the person giving you advice has your best interests in mind, you'll tend to move forward on a productive path.

The verbs in these video titles like "Lex challenges/argues/etc", are not accurate. All of them so far really have been "Lex asks a question".

The way this conversation flowed, it sounds like both of these guys think 'success' means pleasing your father

The combination I have frequently observed (not saying it is some ironclad law), is that hyper-successful men often have a very loving and supportive mother; but a jealous, absent or emotionally withdrawn father.

This seems to create conditions of high self-esteem (which they get from the mother) which gives them the confidence to try bold things, but simultaneously a strong desire for approval which they never got from their father.

There are countless historical examples of such men.

"tell me if I'm wrong" is a debate tactic used on both sides here, interesting.

Nice to see JP finally open up about his dad. Makes you wonder if his whole celebrity schtik was just a way to please daddy.

Still nice to see JP has not lost his sesquipedalian vocabulary.

Success means achieving the outcome you desired. Being “successful” is some version of commonly desired traits in a cultural consensus of what constitutes a relatively positive outcome for life. The thing to be discussed is are the values that determine success best for the long term perpetuation of that culture AND is the cost of that success worth it? These same questions can and should be asked at the level of each individual as well. If your goal is to have a family and you have one - you are successful. If you’re is to have a family and you don’t you either have to change the desired outcome or change your behavior to be successful.

Interesting. I've never heard Peterson talk about his relationship to his parents or his childhood.

title was misleading.

this wasn't an argument and it wasn't about success.

you two were just trying to find that common ground about the role of parents effects on success.

I get what you're saying and I get what Jordan is saying. And you're both right. An overbearing or difficult father isn't the same as an unloving father.

Where did Steven Pinker go? We need him back into these convos and Lex great point about the struggles within the family.
