Tale of the ducktail: 50 years of the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7

To mark the 50th anniversary of the gamechanging Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7, two-time rally world champion, Walter Röhrl, and former Le Mans winner, Timo Bernhard, met up in the cockpit of the legendary vehicle. Sitting side-by-side in what was once Germany’s fastest production sportscar, they took a journey through time to talk about its profound impact and the legend of the RS. After jumping aboard a 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0, two further cars awaited: the 1973 911 Carrera RSR 2.8 – the forefather of all RSR models – and its RSR 3.0 successor; the last and most powerful development stage in the RS series.

Just to think that this 2.7RS is 50years old, way ahead of it's time and at the hands of one of the greats, Mr Rohrl. Then Timo in the 4.0RS, another great! Porsche, the BEST Motorsport Car manufacturer EVER! No other company comes close to the accolades and achievements.

RS 4.0 - bestes Auto was ich je gefahren bin. Einfach brutal! So was von emotional. Bin glaube ich genau den aus diesem Video gefahren. War damals noch ein Pressefahrzeug.

Ich habe das Glück selber einen alten Porsche zu besitzen. Dieses Jahr war ich damit das erste mal ein bisschen rennmäßig unterwegs. Ich war mit Walter Röhrl auf der historischen Solitude Revival unterwegs. Es war ein fest, sich mit den ganzen Porsches zu messen. Und genau wie im Video erwähnt. Ich bin mit dem Auto auf Achse angereist, Rennen gefahren und auf Achse wieder nach "A Porsche never dies!"

Porsche never disappoints. They're 911 series has been iconic. Powerful, precise handling, and all in all dependable for your track and street pleasures. Keep it up Porsche. And I watched the Porsche commercial of a kid who liked a Porsche and came back to buy it years later. That's my dream too. I'm a kid who is inspired by Porsche and I will make sure I buy one later in the years.



In German: Porsche enttäuscht nie. Ihre 911-Serie ist ikonisch. Kraftvolles, präzises Handling und alles in allem zuverlässig für Ihr Rennstrecken- und Straßenvergnügen. Weiter so Porsche. Und ich sah mir die Porsche-Werbung eines Jungen an, der einen Porsche mochte und Jahre später zurückkam, um ihn zu kaufen. Das ist auch mein Traum. Ich bin ein Kind, das von Porsche inspiriert ist, und ich werde sicherstellen, dass ich später in den Jahren einen kaufe.

in 1971 in Australia we had the FalconGTHO and Torana GTR XU1 with front and rear spoilers as standard although not quite sports cars but built for local endurance racing, cutting-edge 70’s aero - I do remember the 2.7 RS winning the final Targa Florio and being fascinated by the duck tail and flared arches
