Songhai Empire : Great African Civilizations

The Songhai empire started as a small kingdom along the Niger River. In the 7th century, it was known as the kingdom of Gao and was under the control of the Ghana and Mali empires. But in the 15th century, it grew into a an empire. At its zenith, the Songhai Empire included parts of what are now the countries of Niger, Mali, and Nigeria, surpassing the Ghana and Mali empires in terms of territory.
