The lesson is BUTT OUT! Alicent should have either buddied up to her stepdaughter and got her sons out of Kings Landing and then brokered a marriage to Hellaena to one of the Strong boys... they might not have been illegitimate sons to Laenor. Also to be considered legitimate was to have your father claim you which Laenor did and the Seasnake didn't question. She knew that she could only hold power if the men in her life let her have it. Her children were less than stellar.

Everyone overplayed their hands, going to war with her stepdaughter was going to be bloody. Also, Alicent forgot she only had 4 children dragon riding Targaryen children, Rhaynera could have as many as she wanted. So the longer this went on the more heirs to challenge Aegon which in the end the greens lost the Iron Throne.

It is always toxic when Hightowers involve themself in the Targaryens affairs.
In fact the Targaryens would have been better off not marring other families. No watered down bloodlines or leaches trying to suck the blood out of you.
Rhaenyra's father should have had his Hightower children fed to the dragons just to protect his firstborn
