From the historical margins, in some ways perhaps an unfortunate victim of Marx's "ruthless criticism," does the self-taught Proudhon offer us something that can be recuperated for rethinking socialism today? Bottici's excavation uncovers the philosophical depth of Proudhon's critique of property and traces his argument for anarchy. Arato's response starts with an examination of the historical argument of Proudhon and reconstructs Proudhon's political theory of revolution and federation. He ends with remarks on the commune model and dispute between Marx and Engels on one hand, and Proudhon and Bakunin on the other.
