Russia captures Avdiivka in biggest loss for Ukraine since battle for Bakhmut

Russia's Defense Ministry says they have captured the eastern city of Avdiivka, less than a day after Ukrainian troops withdrew, making it the largest victory for Russia since they took control of Bakhmut in May 2023.

President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that Russian troops should develop their success on the battlefield in Ukraine after the fall of Avdiivka where he said Ukrainian troops were forced to flee in chaos.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s military said its troops are taking up new defensive positions in the east – and repelling Russian attempts to develop an offensive thrust.

The capture of Avdiivka pushes Ukrainian forces further from the Russian-held bastion city of Donetsk.

Let's think about this for a minute... Ukraine has a population of 33.2 million. In comparison, Canada has a population of 40.5 million, Italy 58.8 million, Spain 48.4 million, Germany 84.6 million and Poland at 38 million. With higher populations and wealth than Ukraine, would we realistically expect that any one of these countries could defeat Russia in a war? NO. So why would we expect Ukraine to defeat Russia? Why should we support and cheer Ukraine into a war that these other Western countries would never dare to do themselves?

After 2 years Russia is halfway to Kyiv, Russia's army is bigger than it was 2 years ago and weapons manufacturing has grown, Ukraine's army is half of what it was 2 years ago, economy shattered, more dependent on charity, a realistic assessment should consider where will Russia be in 2 more years. Was a stupid move to sign the US-Ukraine pact in Nov 2021 to end Ukraine neutrality, change status quo and start this war.
