YAMAHA MT09 2021 - 'LIF CONTROL' - TESTED!

Testing out Yamaha's "LIF Control" system which is essentially wheelie control. Whilst I don't personally use the system, this test demonstrates that it is actually a really good system and that it is also rather sophisticated when compared to other "wheelie control" systems available today. Unlike some crude systems found on other motorcycles, power is not cut, but rather it is metered to maintain control and forward momentum.

The system uses the inertial measurement unit (IMU) to detect the angle of attack of the motorcycle (i.e. a wheelie) and the rate of climb of the front wheel, it then introduces intervention (closing the throttle butterflys, retarding ignition timing) to control the rate at which the front wheel climbs, and also the maximum allowable angle of attack. Note the system will not allow the bike to reach "balance point", nor will the system permit "clutch up" wheelies. The intervention is adjustable through levels 1-3 and OFF (our favorite). Level 1 representing the least amount of intervention in the ON setting.

The intervention also appears to be mapped for each gear, introducing more intervention (lower angle of attack, slower rate of climb) as speeds rise (probably for safety reasons).

it would be interesting to compare 0-60 & 0-100 times with the system on and off... Maybe a future video.

Nice little section of test road;) With lift control in #1 I find it allows a decent wheelie angle and can quick shift into 2nd and starts to bring it down a little then by the time I quickshift into 3rd it is bringing back down to the pavement. The '21 MT09SP is a very fun and engaging bike....like a 2-wheel Porsche GT3 that you can wheelie! Keep up the great MT09SP content!

Thank you! I’ve read a lot saying it just slows the rate that it lifts. To me that meant I could still loop it. I appreciate your research ;)

This is so useful to know for someone like me who likes a bit of fun off crests etc, but sadly past clutching up 4th gear mingers🤣. Really appreciate your content on the MT-09 SP!

Was that a power wheelie at 2:00 in second gear? Damn, my bike is capable of things I'm not even aware of. I've been riding it with lift control at max for almost a year now, and I'm yet to discover new things about it. Dope.

So in other words it even makes riders who can't wheelie look like wheelie kings

So it does limit the lift. That’s nice to know. I’ve been leaning forward and rolling in to prevent it from looping because it comes up so easily I thought it would just keep going until I’m on my ass. It was smooth the first time it happened on my way home after purchasing the bike and ever since I’ve been playing it safe thinking I got lucky. It does it great when I unintentionally do it then a big womp womp when I purposely try lol.

Would have been nice to have seen the difference in the lift control settings when attempting to wheelie. Good vid though.

Great review. The MT 09 will always be a great bike. Possibly my next choice.

NB! You can still flip it with lft control on if you do a clutch wheelie.
I did wheelie on second on my MT09SP a few days ago, and I think I did almost 12 o'clock wheelie, it was scary. No foot on the brake, as I expect lft control to always limit me on 45 degrees.

“Let’s wack it on.” So when he wants to turn it off, would he say, “now let’s wack it off, ”?

Huh. I haven't actually tried the LIF control on my '23 yet. I just turned it off. I wasn't aware it wouldn't allow clutch ups though. That's interesting

I drive in TCS mode 1 and drive mode 1 on the most aggressive settings and for the life of me I can’t get the bike up from power wheelies. Any advice? I don’t want to practice clutch ups until I’m comfortable controlling the bike from a power wheelie

Now do a video with clutching it up in lif control Instead of a power wheelie.

What exhaust are you running 🙄 sounds nice. I am waiting on my Mivv GP pro 😎

does traction control intervene with wheelies at all? or just when the rear starts slipping in corners and on wet surfaces and stuff.

I'm ordering a mt09 this coming year. I'll run it on but I'll still roll into the throttle and stay tucked to play safe. Would hate to loop and get hurt. Mentally would be concerned of the LIF system failing to read and if I pin the throttle unexpectedly coming up faster than expected
