You have ln( 1 + u) where u = x/2 + x^2/4 + ... Then use the expansion for ln(1+x) but replace all the xs with x/2 + x^2/4 + ... You only see the terms given because you only want the first 3 terms.

wait, when you have the ln(1+u), wouldn't you need to replace the x's in the ln(1+x) general formula with u's? Rather than just replacing ln(1+u) with u?
