The Amazon's Mysterious Chinese Village 🇵🇪

🇵🇪 I was hitching a ride on a transport ship down the Amazon River in Peru when I started noticing people among the passengers who looked distinctly like the descendants of Chinese people. Many boarded and disembarked the ship at the various little jungle towns the ship stopped at until we reached the town of Alto Monte which was like something from a Hong Kong kung Fu movie. But who were these people and why were they dressed in robes and gowns? I disembarked to find out...

Thanks to my amiga and chama Lucy for helping with subtitles on this journey 🇻🇪

Bald polishing up his Spanish has been incredible. He’s been able to hold more meaningful convos and in return we get to hear awesome stories from the locals. Love it

Being from Peru, a lot of the people who you said looked Chinese, just looked indigenous. My sister has similar features as her father is indigenous.

11:11 imagine being a random villager in the Amazon minding your own business, and a random guy in modern clothes comes to you saying that everyone there is chinese. Love you Bald <3

You brought tears to my eyes this video, I have the upmost respect for you. I am a Peruvian who has watched your videos for a long time, and hearing you speak and recite fun facts about our history is a beautiful thing... I've always wondered where our asian like features came from, and having you casually tell me the history brought joy to me. Thank you for traveling the world and bringing this happiness to us all here on Youtube.

A few weeks ago I saw Bald in a hotel in Iquitos Perú called the Hotel Victoria Regia. He was in the hotel cafeteria but I was too shy to go up to him and say hi. I was on 8 day trip in Perú with a group from my church and never thought I'd see Bald in a random hotel where I'd be staying in a city in the Amazon region of Perú that is not well known around the world.

The Matsiguenka being something of an isolated tribe, probably has closer genetic ancestry to the first hunter-gatherers who came to the land from Asia 12, 000+ years ago than the less isolated populations in Peru. The isolation has allowed their genetic features to remain as other populations interbred more widely with people of greater ethnic diversity. This is also why Native Americans in North America have Asian like features.

Some cultures migrated across the land bridge of the Bering Strait, spreading south through North America. Others traveled by boat to South America and spread north from there. You're basically looking at a snapshot of humanities neolithic past when you see these people.

Bald's big heart for Babushka's makes me emotional. The exchange with the lady with the sticks in the village got me. We really don't think about how so many other people live in the world....how hard it is, regardless of their age, yet how much harder it is when you are old and with physical disabilities. I'm glad Bald has never forgot this lesson and shows us how just a small gesture can make all the difference in a person's life, even if just for a little while.

When I visited Lima, I was really struck by the large and colorful Chinatown district. Fantastic restaurants called "chifas". Some Peruvian cuisine is Chinese influenced. Also many Japanese people- former President Fujimori is Japanese-Peruvian. Peru must have offered incentives to Asians for immigration, build up its agriculture, railways, mining, etc. Enjoyed your tour very much!.

I think South America might be your new forte mate. It’s amazing how learning a bit of the language can enhance the experience. Good stuff

Regarding the appearance of the people in the amazon. Another reason many of them look central or east Asian-ish is because of their indigenous ancestry most of them are 100% native although some are mixed with other ancestries. Hope this was helpful !

I was fortunate to spend time in Sarawak( Borneo) in the early sixties, lived in Long houses etc etc, long before the curse of the modern World got them. Living in the Jungle with the Ibans and Dyaks was the best times of my life, ( I am in my eightieth year). Watching them hunt with Blowpipes, seeing the shrunken heads hanging up, the sights the sounds the smells, it was magic. Great to see Mr Bald doing so much and travelling with the real people, plus his compassion for the less fortunate. I really admire this man.

I love how raw and unfiltered these videos are. This is TRUE TRAVEL. Not some fake instagram crap. It's gritty, hot, sweaty and you smell like an armpit upon your arrival.

The Chinese looks are more about the origin of the first Americans that crossed into the continent during the last ice age from Asia to the American continent. The entirety of the continent was originally populated by 8 families alone. It was amazing to hear the contemporary history rundown of a particular tribe by the Peruvian guy. It's safe to assume these tribes are very much reminiscent to the population before the arrival of the Spanish... Chinese heritage is more easily found in the large cities and it's very strong.
