One of the first and most important Bebop pianists Al Haig was a personal favourite of Bud Powell, who called him "My idea of a perfect piano player". Stan Getz called him "the best accompanist in business". For all that Al Haig remained obscure, played in society bands and recorded occasionally for small labels. His mastery, however is evident on this solo record, one of my favourite solo piano albums. BTW, this "Lament" is written by Ahmad Jamal, who used to learn Al Haig solos from records when he was young.

A beautiful ballad written by J.J. Johnson and played beautifully here.

Al lost two wives under questionable circumstances but no conviction. Jazz is a tough way to make a living. Getz s said Music is my life at the cost of everything else in my life. Miles called it an addiction. Edward Kennedy Elington called it his mistress. I'm glad I found out early on that I was a better fan than muscian. Rubop keep em coming. <3

No Lament on this jazz classic. The daddy of cool just taking a smooth turn all by his lonesome which begs the question what becomes of a faded musician.
