My Papaw was born in 1929 and joined in ‘43. Not sure how long he was in, but he got all the way to the Pacific before getting caught and sent home for being underage. Somehow he was able to join up again in ‘45 and got stationed in Italy guarding POWs before the war ended. Astounding to think about a kid doing that - let alone how many others did as well.

He went on to marry my Oma in occupied Germany, fight in Korea, and then raised my Dad in West Germany until ‘67 when they moved to Ft. Knox where he was a drill instructor during the Vietnam War. Quite the life. I think he quietly struggled hard with what he saw.

These heroes are THE great generation for so many reasons. They fought a ruthless, terrible war on two fronts, Hitler and the Japanese in the Pacific. We all grew up in a free and peaceful world because of them. Deep respect !

My grandfather served on Guadalcanal. I served in Desert storm and Iraq and Afghanistan. Thank you for your sacrifice sir.
