Blood Thinners for Afib – Do I Really Need Them?

In this video, Dr. Hurst explains the role of blood thinners in managing atrial fibrillation (Afib) and their importance in reducing the risk of stroke. He discusses how the CHA2DS2-VASc risk score is used to assess stroke risk and determine whether blood thinners are necessary. Dr. Hurst highlights the effectiveness of blood thinners in lowering stroke and death risk, while also considering the potential for increased bleeding risk.

I have rare short bouts of AFib. When I say that I talking at most 4 hours. 98% of the time it’s only a few minutes. For me after a second eliquis pill I will be passing blood the next morning. After discussion with my cardiologist we’ve decided to stop the eliquis unless the AFib becomes more frequent and lasts longer. My c2v score is 0 so my stoke risk is very very low due to AFib.

Actually say it like it really is. They are not blood thinners but are anti-coagulants.

So, every single female that is 65 and over are automatically at a score of 2 and therefore should automatically be put on blood thinners? That just does not sound right.

So, who came up with this scoring scheme? How do we know it is accurate? My uncle has afib for 20 years. He is now 74. No co morbidity. Not overweight. Never smoked. He exercises. His cardiologist recommended rat poison, warfarin, 20 years ago. He never has taken a blood thinner. My uncle said tumeric, garlic, and cayenne pepper help thin the blood. He includes them in his diet every day. Go figure.

Have there been studies using tumeric?

Regarding the CHADS2VASC scoring, what if one's only risk factor is a previous stroke - *due to atrial fibrillation* - and one has since then undergone successful ablation? Would the score then (in practice) become zero?

I have been told I have Afib. But I never had any kind of "episode" of Afib. So. I'm thinking I do not have Afib.

All women over 65 have a score of 2. Pretty much everyone will be on blood thinners…similar to everyone should be on statins.
