Top 5 Dual Sport Motorcycles You can buy right now for under $3000
Honda CRF300L Rally: Where the dirt ends and road begins, the CRF300L Rally is waiting to bring adventure bike capability to your everyday commute. The nimble design and plentiful low-end power combine with smart features for an ideal transportation solution through busy streets and bumpy trails. The bodywork is inspired by Dakar Rally racebikes, which means it looks as good as it performs. The tall windscreen provides solid protection against the elements. And the long motocross-style seat gives you all-day comfort and allows you to easily move around in the saddle. If you have a dual sport that’s even lighter and more affordable in mind, make sure you check out our honda CRF300L.

Honda CRF300L:
Balance is the key when riding any motorcycle. And we’re not talking about just balancing on two wheels: We’re talking about the balance between size, weight, power and handling that makes some bikes great—like the new Honda CRF300L. Based on our previous CRF250L, for 2021, it gets a larger engine with more torque and a whole host of chassis and suspension refinements. What you end up with is one of the best-balanced bikes ever for on- and off-road use. Perfect for weekend trail rides, it’s also among the best choices ever for commuting or urban transportation. And if you’re looking for a version with a windscreen and Dakar-inspired bodywork for a little more weather protection, make sure you check out our new CRF300L Rally.

Yamaha Tenere 700:
The Yamaha Ténéré 700 is a midsize adventure/dual-sport motorcycle manufactured by Yamaha since 2019. It features a 689 cc (42.0 cu in) parallel-twin engine which powers the motorcycle through a six-speed gearbox and chain drive. Brakes are equipped with rider-switchable (on-off) ABS. The "baby Ténéré" is the latest in a series of dual-sport Yamaha motorcycles named after the Ténéré desert stage of the Dakar Rally in the Sahara. The successor to Yamaha's XT660Z Ténéré was first announced as the T7 concept at the 2016 EICMA with an anticipated production launch in 2018. A refined concept was publicized a year later.
Yamaha announced that delivery of bikes would begin in Europe in July 2019, and only the following year to the USA due to emissions and other regulatory delays. The liquid-cooled 4-stroke 8-valve DOHC engine with crossplane crankshaft was already in use and well reviewed in Yamaha's MT-07 naked and Tracer 700 sport touring bikes.

I scored!
I found a 96 xr600r, with a Baja Designs dual sport kit.
Race Tech suspension, recent top end and clutch (reciepts).
New tires and tubes, chain and sprockets, IMS tank, bark busters, bars and risers, FMF exhaust...the whole 9 yards
The guy was an older rider, who had all of this work done to it, but had recently suffered some health issues.
So....he couldn't start it!!!
He said that he had several guys come to look at it....but apparently, none of them knew the starting procedure. (No e start.)
So he refused to sell it to them.
So, as a former XR owner, I knew how to start it.
He told me.
...if you can start it, it's yours.
I did the deal, and it started, first big kick.
This guy lit up like times square!
He said that he had been waiting for the right guy to come along, so his bike would go to the right rider.
That was 18 years ago, and I still have it...and, still talk to the old guy that I bought it from, a couple of times a year.
Oh, the stories I've heard!!!
Bikes are the glue that holds a lot of us riders together, even after many years. Best community on the planet!!!!

The used market is insane at least in MA where i am. Bought my first bike last year and initially wanted used but saving 2000 over a new bike to buy a 20 year old beater just wasn't worth it. I ended up buying a new klx230 for 5500 all in. Comparable used bikes were going for 3000-4500 for 10-20 year old bikes. Definitely not worth the savings. Buying used you obv have cash go take out a loan for the remaining ammount and get a free 1 year warranty with the new bike.

Good info on inexpensive used dual sport bikes. These smaller bikes are a lot of fun to ride and are cheap to own.

I'd get a Suzuki DR 200. Those Suzuki DR two valve motors from 100-230cc are absolutely indestructible.Low seat height, big tank and great handling too.

All bikes in general are higher than they should don't know if they have Bike Fever or lots of sentimental value for the high mileage bike they wore out and they expect you to pay them enough to buy a new one?
The ones $1000.00- $3000.00 have problem's and don't usually run.
Or their very high mileage.
You usually need to be in the right place at the right time and a Bike shop can never be the right place that's like going to a scalper.

The bikes your showing are roughly 1989-1991. That's 32-34 yr old dual sport motorcycles. Not a easy living 34 yr old street bike. But a 34 yr old dual sport thats probably been ridden hard. Everyone knows what I'm talking about. Last thing I want is to break down w/a 34 yr old dual sport bike 40 miles from home deep in the woods. Odds are pretty good it might happen. Better off spending the extra $2, 000 and purchase a new trouble free bike or one that is 2-3 yrs old.

Nice review. Thinking your specs on the klr 650 h.p. were a tad high the 2022 only pumps out about 35 still a solid bike. Buddy's got a 2012 never asked for anything.

$3200 for a 1997 motorcycle is insane! 27 years old and you can buy a decent bike brand new with new technology for 50% more!

The XR400 is a nice used bike if you can find one.
