I played this song in a daily devotion in a 12 step rehab in downtown OKC a year ago and stood in front of 60 people from all walks of life and shared the backstory of this song and how jewel wrote this when she was homeless. Simple message of hope. Never give up.

Love this song. From Wikipedia:

"Hands" is the first single released from American singer Jewel's second album, Spirit (1998).
In 2002, Jewel elaborated on the song's origin. Before she wrote "Hands", she experienced kidney troubles that prevented her from working, and as a result, she was fired from several successive jobs, sending her into poverty. She began to shoplift food but worried she would begin to steal more expensive items. One day, she noticed a sundress in a shop window and went inside to try it on, planning to steal it. However, when she noticed the price tag, she decided against it. She explained, "I had the price tag in my hand and it was one of those moments in my life, like a lightening bolt struck me, it was $39.99 and I thought 'when did I lose faith in myself? When did I start thinking that I can't earn $40 for myself?'" She left the store, leaving the dress behind, and began to write "Hands" soon afterwards, referring to her own hands that would function better writing songs than stealing dresses"

as a teenager, i scrubbed pots in the back of an Italian restaurant. Jewel was big then (1996-1998) and was on the cheap hanging radio we had in that back kitchen. I am a family man now, with a lot of things to take care of, and people to look after. I try to be the rock of the family but it's tough sometimes. I found this song at the climbing gym yesterday. It takes me back to a more innocent time. inner peace is a choice many times. hope you find it. much love.

I’m going through very hard times now and This song makes my faith in god even stronger, I’m a believer and everyday I see god just being able to open my eyes every morning and able to breath it’s gods blessing . Yes be kind to each other as Jesus was when he walks this earth.

batteling clinical depression, generalized anxiety, and ocd It feels so impossible to win the war but I keep going, songs like this remind us that it is worth it. Be kind to everyone, for we are all fighting for our lives. If you fall it matters only that you get back up again, defeat teaches us more then any victory can. Also remember, nobodys got it all figured out quite yet. It will all work out in the end, it will all be okay.

As an EMT working during the coronavirus crisis, this song is helping me fight what so far seems to so many to be a losing battle. I'm not liking the lockdowns at all, and some days I feel like I dont have the patience to do this for what they are saying could be months
