LYRICS

You took your coat off, stood in the rain
You're always crazy like that
And I watched from my window
Always felt I was outside looking in on you
You're always the mysterious one with
Dark eyes and careless hair
You were fashionably sensitive
But too cool to care
You stood in my doorway, with nothing to say
Besides some comment on the weather

Well in case you failed to notice
In case you failed to see
This is my heart bleeding before you
This is me down on my knees, and

These foolish games are tearing me apart
And your thoughtless words are breaking my heart
You're breaking my heart

You're always brilliant in the morning
Smoking your cigarettes and talking over coffee
Your philosophies on art, Baroque moved you
You loved Mozart and you'd speak of your loved ones
As I clumsily strummed my guitar

You'd teach me of honest things
Things that were daring, things that were clean
Things that knew what an honest dollar did mean
I hid my soiled hands behind my back
Somewhere along the line, I must have gone off track with you

Excuse me, guess I've mistaken you for somebody else
Somebody who gave a damn
Somebody more like myself

These foolish games are tearing me
You're tearing me, you're tearing me apart
And your thoughtless words are breaking my heart
You're breaking my heart
And you took your coat off, stood in the rain
You're always crazy like that

Funny that when you're a kid, you never imagine yourself getting old, or that the world as you know it will change drastically. All unimaginable things when we're young and careless. Fast forward 25 years and you lost touch with your childhood friends, working an average job, often reminiscing of the past. God damn did we ever take these times for granted. It's almost humbling in a weird twisted way. What a song. What an era. What a time that was. Amazing. Cheers to anyone that knows what I'm sayin'.

Remember seeing her rise to stardom in the 90's. She is one of the few who had the talent to deserve her accolades. This song is amazing.

"Fashionably sensitive, but too cool to care" — I think that encapsulates the entire vibe of the 90s

I'm 46 and I love ppl around my age. We all traveled thru time on earth together. I love finding you guys in the comment sections of these 90s songs, saying funny shit and sad stuff making me cry more. We were lucky huh. Viva los 90s 💕

Edit to correct my incorrect Spanish lol. Thanks, Ruby (:

I was in the Army when this video first came out. I was in the barracks with my platoon when the video started to play on tv. Forty-five seconds in, you couldn't hear a pin drop. All 25 of us went quiet raptured on a journey with this lovely woman and her enchanting voice. Then, rage against the machine came on. We never spoke of it. We did start talking about football, drinking, and talking 💩. So it was in the infantry.

I'm a 41 year old Metal Head and I absolutely love Jewel. I had a huge crush on her as a kid. As an adult, I can still go back to these songs and appreciate them, probably even more than I did as a kid.

🙃 Is anyone still listening in 2024?

This song stands the test of time! I grew up in a broken home, now at 32 semi-healed, i can now remove this song from a parent playing it on repeat, on *those* type of days from childhood and look at it objectively. Honestly, WOW, just wow... I've never felt more connected to my now passed away parent.

One of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever sung. Nostalgia-inducing to the maximum.

26 yrs old Stacey was dedicated this song from 24 yr old Julie from Ferndale MI I was a fool that only loved myself. Now 53, and totally alone with my cat and regrets. One of many.

I haven't heard this song in years, maybe decades. I was 15 when this came out and it used to make me cry. Still does. Simply beautiful all around.

I was born in 1954 and thought this song was an all time great when it came out. Still do.

I’m a 40 year old man and I’m not ashamed to admit this song makes me cry. Even though the piano only version is better.
