How to Avoid Tourist Trap Restaurants in Nepal

I got sick of eating bad food at tourist traps in Nepal, so I went out to find authentic Nepali food. I'll show you what I found, and I'll give you tips on how you to can discover home-cooked authentic food while travelling in Nepal and India.

What I found was Khaja Ghars (Snack Houses). They serve fresh homemade food, just like your mum would make. They're the same dhabas in India. As you travel around Nepal, make sure to eat at Khaja Ghars to avoid the disappointing food that many tourist restaurants serve.

I spent 24 years in the Royal Navy, one thing I learned very quickly was, " look for where the locals eat, not tourists".. 95% of the time it was great !

I was In Kathmandu a few years ago and right across from my hostel there was a small restaurant. It was super simple and absolutely delicious. Every morning I’d start my day off there. Delicious tea and roti with some curry dish. I wish I could go back and have some right now.

Kathmandu was on my bucket list for a long time. I always wanted to fly there and make my way up to a monastery in the mountains and make a donation so I could stay there for an entire winter and experience those magnificent mountains and culture and stunning beauty during such tough months

I just love how you're able to connect with local population. Even Nepalis ourselves don't connect with each other now days. Lots of love from Nepal.

This is interesting. In Indonesia we call pickles "acar". While in Nepal it is called "achar". Wow, close enough 😯😊

I absolutely love that they cook vegetarian food in a separate kitchen. Mad respect 👊🏻 would most definitely eat at this place. Looks indeed like a home kitchen, very friendly it’s simply perfect for someone like me that doesn’t eat animal products.

So nice that YT suggested your channel Karl. Being an adventurer myself I'd like to visit these places you went to and experience the place, the people and the food. I've worked in the middle east and experienced other cultures and I want more, thumbs up from Manila.

Love that they actually cook the meat separate from the vegetables unlike 90% of American restaurants
I’m not vegetarian or any of that but I respect it

As a Nepali who has never been to her place of origin, I love watching these type of videos- just people out and about. The people are so lovely. I remember watching a video of how locals gave free food tourists who got stuck in Nepal during the height of the pandemic.

Made a trip to Nepal about 3 years back, one thing that stands out are the humble and helpful people, so hard working and eager to make you welcome !!!

Great info, I try to find the local food when I can. When I was in Bali the local authentic street food was phenomenal and quite cheap but I didn’t find it until a few weeks of being on the island (and eating overpriced and mediocre tourist food).

omg Karl, I so envy you being in Nepal. Subha yatra - happy travels. I first visited in 1982 and I was about to visit again for the 9th time in 2020 but Covid prevented me. I so hope I can return in 2022.

Nepal was my first trip overseas because my Nepalese friend was getting married. I went for a month and stayed in a few different places, but our hub was in Kathmandu on one of the main streets where we stayed with my friends parents.

Nepal is an incredible country, very lovely people - but I suspect my experience was a bit different as I was with a local and his family are quite well known. We rarely got hassled for tour guides/taxis etc cos people could see we were with a Nepalese person.

We got to see the best local known places for really good prices, and when we went to Thamel which is tourist spot we knew what places to avoid.

I’m very lucky for the experience I had, but man if you can travel Nepal with someone who speaks local language your experience is enhanced ten fold.

The people are incredibly friendly, we found ourselves travelling through cities (like in the old city district in Bhaktapur) and asking people if we could see into their homes. Multiple times people just let us in and walked us through and let us ask questions.

We always gave people money to show thanks, or gave them a gift of some kind as I understand money can be a bit rude. People more often than not just were happy to speak to us.

Beautiful country.
