Today, I'm discussing the Flame King Refillable 1 lb Empty Propane Cylinder Tank - with Refill Kit and CGA600 Connection.

I've been refilling 1 lb propane tanks for years, and you may have seen some of my propane refill adapter videos. However, In this video, I'm discussing the pros and cons of the Flame King 1 lb cylinders versus the disposable (Coleman) propane tanks.

We're going to look at the following:
0:00 - Intro
0:34 - About East Texas Homestead
0:49 - Why did I make this video?
1:48 - What's the cost difference between the Flame King refill system and the less expensive 1 lb refill adapters?
3:00 - Does the Flame King 1lb tank hold more or less propane than the Coleman disposable cylinder? Can you refill them both completely?
3:48 - Is the Flame King refillable propane cylinder tank safer than a disposable propane tank?
4:47 - The biggest reason you should go with Flame King (this could keep you out of federal prison).
6:13 - After we talk through these things to consider before refilling your propane tanks at home, I will tell you which refill kit/system I think you should go with. The answer may surprise you.
6:50 - Buddy Flex Preview.
7:00 - Wrapping it all up.

Great vid... and great points. I refill the 1 pounders all the time and NEVER had ANY issues.. use a scale and weigh them and you'll be fine. And they DO have a pressure relief valve

Good overview. I refill my disposable for years and I do get them to full 80% capacity by chilling it first. Plain and simple. I never touch the overpressure valve either. They would never be able to PROVE that a given tank was refilled or not so they point about the fine is dumb I think. Simple - make sure you weigh and never go over 16 oz of propane. Plain and simple. Throw out and use new disposables every several cycles (8-12?) too. Buy the brass caps as mentioned. Great overview

Where I live, a single disposable 1 lb. Propane cylinder costs about $12.00 plus 15% tax at Walmart! I bought a pair of the FK refillable cylinders and a valve to fill em for Can.$85. delivered. I can now fill one for under a $! That is approx. equivalent to buying 6 pre-filled here. Pick your choice! Safety first!

You don't have to use the flame king kit to refill them the flame king bottles. I just use a 90 degree adapter with a valve that I bought for $15 on Amazon. I also just bought a two pack of bottles for $36.

Flame King refillable tanks are constructed with heavier gauge steel than the disposables so they are safer in that aspect. There is a YouTube video where someone cuts them in half to show you the differences in metal thickness. Flame King refillables also have an Allen screw relief valve to open while filling so you know when the refillable 1 lb tank is completely full when the liquid gas begins spitting out from it . I bought several of the Flame King refillables so I will not be buying or filling any more disposable bottles.

As a former career Firefighter I can say it is untrue that small or larger LP tanks have never been involved in accidents and or death of people. I can assure you it has happened more than most hear about. The reason most don't know about these incidents is that it usually happens in very rare occasions and usually smaller localities. The authorities aren't always diligent about reporting their emergency responses. Be safe and use only DOT approved LP tanks. Use safe practice procedures at all times. Money saved is not worth you or your loved ones health and life.

Rather than transporting a refilled 1lb tank I would take an 11 or 5lb tank and fill them when I get to where I will use it. It can be purged before travelling back.

You don't have to pull out the purge button on the top of the tank. get an Alan wrench and put it down to the top of the main valve. Push the Allen wrench down 3 or 4 Times To let The air out Unhook it from the tank and do this 3 times you will fill it to the top and get a full 16 oz in there. This works With the $8 part That comes straight out of the tank.

Hmmm? How is the DOT going to know if you're transporting refilled "disposable" propane cylinders?

What makes the Coleman bottles disposable, as opposed to the Flame King?

You can get a full charge by burping the small bottles with a punch or drill bit for 4-5 seconds. do it with the bottle upright, depress the valve inside the threaded nipple, then fill again with the large tank. DO THIS OUTSIDE WITH NO IGNITION SOURCES NEARBY🔥, DO NOT MESS WITH THE VALVE ON THE BOTTLE ITSELF, it's a safety blow off valve that works opposite of the main valve. only do it 2 times, and weigh the bottle. it should be between 15-16 oz net, if its a little over, bleed it down with your punch.

I use these 1lb bottles with a big buddy propane furnace, and it's nice to get a full bottle run without having to get out of a nice warm sleeping bag :o)

I see Mr. Heater offers an optional Flame King refill kit that includes two bottles for just $35 extra when you purchase one of their heaters.

Can you use the Flame King adapter/check gauge( YSN212B - 2 for $20 on AMZ) instead of the big rig?

Good video. Menards has the Flame King kit for $37 and extra tanks for $14.

I advise never to even touch those little valves on the side of the top of the 1 lb tanks. They seem to be kind of fragile and touching them might instigate a leak.

The one pound tanks can easily be refilled to full. After it is re-filled halfway, if I remove the 1 lb tank from the adapter and, setting it upright, if I then press the valve in the center of the tank downwards for about 4 or 5 seconds with a long screwdriver to let gas escape, and if I then quickly reattach it to the adapter and re-commence refilling, enough liquid propane should go in to fill the 1 lb bottle. But I must take care by using a scale, not to overfill it.

There is a safety reason for the warning on the Coleman tanks, there is always a warning labels on items which could be considered dangerous for transportation. I fill an occasional Coleman bottle for my small blow torch, and find occasionally it leaks from the safety valve, I dispose of those tanks.
You will also notice there is an expiration date on the larger cylinders, they have to go for inspection and approval before use. They will refuse to fill the tank ifs out of date.

I'm wondering if using the system with the 20 lb refillable tank (or exchangeed rank) is really worth it when it cost you $3 at Tractor Supply to refill a one pound tank. They don't charge you a bulk rate refilling it to 15lbs. Some people go the blue rhino or exchange method. Others find an empty 20lbs tank, for free, then exchange. Unless you are a frequent user and need a 20lbs. Currently I only infrequently use propane for camping use. I found the 1lbs tank at ebay alone for $25.

Warning!!! Do not over fill the non-refillable bottle. I had a bottle I over filled, and it sat inside on my dining table for about two weeks then "BANG"! Good thing there was no ignition source near, or it would have been BOOM/FIRE! I can't figure out how to load a photo of it, but be warned, they can rupture.
