Not sure about his decision making. He got rich and did nothing about his hair.

The two most selective schools in France are Polytechnique and the ENS (Ecole Normale Supérieure). You can only join these schools after some of the most difficult math exams in the world. This is were most of the employees at Mistral come from. There are only 430 students who join Polytechnique every year from every corner of France...
Daniel Levy went to Polytechnique.

You can't see why they would invest?
Who ever comes up with Super Intelligence will rule the world, at least the world of tech, innovation, material science, physics etc.. ASI that is able to do autonomous research will change the world we live, rock our beliefs to the bone and blow our minds with things we never thought possible.
Imagine a PhD level researcher able to make millions of decisions per second, able to see millions of data points at once, able to ferret out the subtle patterns that give new materials etc... No ego, no sick days, no political bias, no coffee breaks, no office politics, no need to worry about funding. Just research 24/7 on what ever task it's been assigned.
THAT is why they will invest.

I take it at face value. Ilya's new company lays it bare, he wants to focus on the end product Super Intelligence and does not want to be distracted by interim products.

Safe superintelligence is like saying a "safe sword". No sword is truly a safe object and is always able to be used in the wrong way by the wrong people.

You can be an investor in a company and have no influence over how they do what they do. It would appear this is a hedge.

Hedging your bets as an investor is common, and is not necessarily a conflict of interest. The VC firms here were not just making bets on startups but also on the people. I suppose this shows more directly how strongly they value Ilya, since they were already betting on him.

As a consumer and human on this planet with the ability to grow 7 figure businesses from scratch, I would invest in this company. Why: The goal is more important than a short term win. In other words, I would much rather them win the AI race. I want a safe AI. We need a safe AI. The danger of AI is immense. This should be the number 1 priority keeping in mind we must also be capable of fighting off other countries and their AI. This is imperative. If AI is ulterior motives, we are screwed.

I love Ilya, he is going to sweep this whole game and very few language programs will survive- he's so great. Such a nice guy too. Best of luck Ilya!! xo, S

It's a commercial product Matt, just not short-term, and no preceding product versions - aiming only for the SSI, when achieved, as the product.

Thanks Matthew - great job - really appreciate your synopses - in this case money is chasing AI at such a rapid rate - VC rules are getting broken - $1b against a $5b valuation with no product (yet) or customers seems reckless. But they are betting on the founders to figure it out. We'll see.

I'm sure they are investing a billion $ out of the kindness of their hearts ... is an example of something that never happens lol.

Venture capitalists like to play it smart by investing in competitors. If one fails but the other hits a 1000 percent return, it easily offsets the loss. It’s a calculated strategy where one big win can cover the risks. Plus, investing in the same industry signals strong confidence in the space, showing they believe it’s on the verge of significant growth.

Safety trumps business. I am glad many people see that (including SSI investors)

Makes sense to me. Commercialization should be the secondary focus anyway as it would come naturally. If SSI successfully creates superintelligence first, everyone would be forced to use their AI or fall into the abyss. Everyone would be using their API. That's where the profit would naturally come flooding in. Better yet, a superintelligent AI would seamlessly be able to figure out how to optimally monetize itself. In fact, if SSI succeeds, it would be able to figure out how to do so in a manner that greatly benefits all of humanity.

I think Ilya realized how much money there was to be made, and that he was the brains of the entire operation and took it upon himself to start something new. I don't think it's anything more complicated than that. Altman does not have any formal education on the tech, he's like Steve Jobs. He's just a businessman - and I'm sure he didn't like his career being lead around by him. Ilya is like Dario Amodei, a brilliant mind that has sophisticated insight into building this tech.

Spot on Matthew VCs care about profit and only profit…makes me confused as well.
