Who Is Worthy to Reveal the New Heavens and Earth?

Jesus says, “I am making everything new.”

Revelation 21:5 (NIV)
He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

In Revelation 1:17 Jesus says, “I am the first and the last.” In Isaiah 44:6 God says, “I am the first and the last.” The Bible is clearly telling us here that Jesus is the eternal God. The only God.

Revelation 1:17-18 (NIV)
17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. 18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.

Isaiah 44:6 (NIV)
6 “This is what the Lord says, Israel’s King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God.”

Only Jesus is worthy to open the scroll and look inside.

Revelation 5:9-10 (NIV)
9 And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. 10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.”

In Revelation chapter 21 John saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and “there was no longer any sea.” The “sea” represents the spiritual realm in Daniel and Revelation. The prophecy of “no longer any sea” means there will be no longer a separation between humans and God.

John heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

John did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
