That transition from smiling to murder face is sinister

Tim Curry is infinitely more unsettling than the remake's Pennywise because he looks like a normal clown. A kid can see him and they won't be immediately afraid because he looks approachable, which makes him even more threatening since he can attack them when they're vulnerable. It actually gives off some really unnerving child predator vibes.

This scene alone is scarier than anything in the remake. Just the way he's scowling at her is terrifying.

This scene in particular was the most scary. This movie is way more frightening than the remake. I remember watching this as a kid in the 90s and there is something about the graininess of the video too that makes it feel unsettling compared to the crisp 4K stuff you get these days. With this scene, it’s the quietness of it. A flicker of the wind reveals the cold and sinister intention. It’s so subtle and because of that, so much scarier…

This really is a fantastic performance from Tim Curry. That expression of just utter contempt and disgust at 1:12 is in some ways more frightening than the kind of inhumanly lanky and eerily baby-faced look we see from Skasgard (which I did think was incredible by the way). It relies entirely on a very human kind of fear factor since he doesn't flash any fangs or make any monster sounds; he just stares at the little girl with this look of complete hatred and malevolence. From this scene alone It could legit be a series about a neighborhood pedophile serial killer, which really does ground the monster concept to hit home in a very real way. You can tell Curry and Skasgard were shooting for different kinds of portrayals with this.

The change from happy clownish to the look of evil incarnate at 1:14 is why this portrayal will always be better. I think scary is 1:14..not jump scares. Nothing against the new it but Tim Curry did a better job with everything he had to work with. Absolutely mad.

I think part of what made the mini series good is how well they worked around their limitations of what they were permitted to show. They could have shown even some splattered blood on a sheet, but they decided the mother's gut wrenching scream would suffice. You didn't need to see anything to know that their was likely the partial remains of a devoured child laying on the ground.
