It’s the format most competitive games are played in - whether that be at your weekly Pokemon League, a Regional Championship, or even the World Championship Tournament itself. The Standard format of the Pokémon Trading Card Game is one of two formats used for officially-sanctioned Play! Pokémon events along with Expanded format. Standard format contains the most recent expansions for the Pokemon Trading Card Game, and rotates once a year, usually after the World Championships in August.

Rotation cycles out the older sets to make way for new sets so that only a certain number of sets are legal in Standard at any one time. This is to keep things fresh and to give new cards room to be played.

Something not mentioned here but pretty important is how affordable PTCG is. There’s typically only ever one really expensive staple (Crobat V at the moment) and once you have your play set of it and staple trainers (another $10-12 tops) you’re basically able to build anything you want with minimal investment.

There's also the "Theme" Format, in which you only use Theme Decks as they are.

However, this Format is more associated with the Online TCG.

There's also Unlimited, in which you just use whatever cards you want, typically whatever you just happen to have available.

I play the online version of this game sometimes. It can be frustrating to evolve a Pokemon through all three stages only for your opponent to drop some superpowered EX card that doesn't have to evolve and does 200 damage and makes you wonder why normal Pokemon cards even exist in the game.

Please note: the Pokemon TCG Standard format is in its worst condition right now. Not in "one deck is too strong" kind of way, but "the fundamental rules of the game are broken" kind of way.
As such, you are NOT going to build your own custom Standard deck, unless you want to lose on Turn 2. It's not all roses here.
