I live in Southern California and have a male Sulcata who lives outside year round. They are pretty common in the town that I live in but not one town over due to my town being in its own warm and dry microclimate. They get big fast, are stubborn and eat a lot, but are also very gentle, social and have great personalities. As long as you do your research and know what you're getting into they make amazing pets. This is not an animal you impulse buy, though I really don't think you should do that with any animal. I love my guy a lot and wouldn't trade him for anything. He even responds to his name like a dog

Percs of living in a tropical region is that you can have big reptiles outside all year long, for example here I've seen people with huge outside enclosures that costed them like 300 USD (with things like wood, chicken wire and cement bricks) for Monitors, big Pythons and Iguanas, and care tends to be far easier too, heat? they got the natural sun, water area? a big tub not connected to anything, every day or two you just flip it down or drain it to the garden and fill it back up with a hose

I live in Wisconsin and have a red-footed tortoise as well, I keep him indoors because of spacing reasons outside but he always does get his hour or two outside😊

There are also laws that don't allow breading/hatch the eggs they lay.. We live in the Netherlands my brother has 2 small turtles.. And that is one of the things that is not allowed here.. Since they are not native and don't really have predictors here they would uncontrollably spread otherwise
