Samus: Ridley killed her parents at the tender age of 3 right before her eyes, taken in by a race of bird aliens, but forced to endure gruelling experimentation and training to survive on their home planet.

Marth: Had his Kingdom overthrown by an evil empire, betrayed by a neighbouring Kingdom who he thought were allies, watched as his sister gave herself up to buy Marth time to escape and has spent years training for the day he gets revenge on all of them.

Sheik: Was forced to flee Hyrule as Ganondorf took over and spent 7 years on the run from him until Link would awaken again. I’m not sure if Zelda had to train to become Sheik or was bestowed the Sheikah powers by Impa, but either way, to spend 7 years constantly watching your back must have been rough.

Lucina: Her entire world was destroyed by a dark dragon, her father and mother died before her and must have spent years trying to fight the dark forces before Naga sent her and the other children back in time.

Shulk: He died alongside his parents, becoming Zanza’s new puppet for his resurrection. He watched as his love interest sacrificed herself, only to be brought back as a machine serving the enemy and to top it all off, he must have seen thousands of visions of his friends dying in the most gruesome of ways and had to work hard to prevent it.

Rosalina: She builds a spaceship to help a lost luma find its parents, while hiding the fact her own parents died, leaving her all alone. She became an immortal mother to the Lumas, travelling the cosmos and essentially becoming a space goddess.

Cloud: Wanted to become a SOLDIER one day so he could impress Tifa, but failed the exam hard, becoming a regular soldier, too ashamed to go back to Nibilheim and when he does go back, it’s torched by Sephiroth, watching him hurt Tifa, became Hojo’s experiment for four years and to top it all off, he had to watch his best friend Zack die so Cloud could live. The trauma he endured was so bad, his memories were mixed with Zack’s, warping his psyche to unspeakable levels.

Corrin: Born to a noble family, but kidnapped by another noble family after they killed his/her father in cold blood. Spent years in an isolated castle, believing his adopted siblings as his own and is then forced to choose his real family or his fake family.

So yeah, don’t underestimate Smash Bros backstories. They make other game’s backstories look pleasant.
