Attaching Table Legs Was Hard Until I Accidentally Found This...

I'm going to show you how to attach desk legs with dowels in this video. I needed to finish the Baltic Birch Desk that I built by making the legs for the desktop. I basically forced my son Jonas to help me with the project. He is like most kids and would rather be doing anything else. The good thing is he doesn't put up a fight and just does whatever his parents tell him to do. He really is a great kid and never questions us. He doesn't have to be told to do things twice. Great right?!?!?

Well I hope I haven't damaged him by impressing upon him my dreams and desires. Am I like one of those parents that wish his kid would someday play in the NFL or NBA? Maybe I'm like one of those stage moms who thinks their kid is going to be the next Meryl Streep? Either way, I thought it would be fun to get him out in the garage and build these table legs.

This project was a lot of fun and had its challenges along the way. Using dowels to connect the skirt to the desktop was like solving a riddle. But I came up with a great idea that worked very well. I think you might find my method to be very helpful!

I think you are indeed a candidate for dad of the year! I too attempt to get my kiddos into the shop to learn how to use power tools (limited to their ability of course). But my little girls absolutely love to sand random wood pieces. I’m not quite sure why? But they do!?! My 13 year old son has learned how to use an angle grinder, and rattle can spray paints. So I think I’m on a good track with him. Great job on the build!

The table turned out incredible and we really enjoy watching families work together on projects. We also nominate you for a YouTube award for best intro ever. We were cracking up laughing! Great job to the both of you!!!

As a single mother raising a 15 year old boy, I think you're absolutely doing the right thing, far too many father's don't make their children a priority. I am fairly new to woodworking/woodturning, and as a proud graduate of YouTube University, I too have taken this new hobby as an opportunity to drag my son away from his video games. My thinking, as Mom, Dad and Mentor in my boy's life, he will appreciate the knowledge as an adult. From minor projects like hanging pictures and shelves, to building decks and small home repairs, he will at least know what tools are needed to accomplish these tasks and how to use them. After a year of being 'forced' to work in the shop, he has now decided to try his hand at making himself a cup on my old lathe, and is considering a small business with Mom making Adirondack Chairs, instead of McDonald's as his part - time job! I call that a win, so far!
You're definitely in the running for Dad of the Year!
