Learning whether to use 'to' or '-ing' in English normally involves memorising a long list or verbs. Today you are going to learn the reason WHY we use gerunds with some verbs and 'to' with others, so you can throw that list in the bin, and finally use verbs with gerund and infinitive with confidence! See you in class!

Brilliant. I am an ESL teacher (of adult students) in Charlotte NC, USA. Thank you for the explanation! Fascinating...I had no idea! Just so you know, you are helping the teachers as much as the students!

I’ve been writing and rewriting lists and lesson plans and you’ve just blown them all out of the water with the time/aspect approach. Top work Christian. My students and I would like to thank you 😁!

I just stumbled on this session after using the phrasal verbs and "get" sessions as useful teaching material. For the first time, another person has confirmed that there is a difference between these two forms and has explained clearly why and how this works.
It also explains why the present participle and the gerund are identical in English, though Christian has not touched on that.
Christian is a great inspiration; his lessons are a ideal supplement to any ESL teacher's collection of materials.

I have found this explanation just now although it comes from the last decade. I would like to put as many thumbs up as possible because it had helped me to figure out the diference between the use of these two forms. Thanks a lot!
