1 woman dead, man injured after double shooting in downtown Fort Lauderdale

A shooting Friday night near the Broward Central bus terminal started with an argument, a woman who claimed she witnessed the shooting told Local 10 News.

A really sad aspect of this is that I have to tell my students, whom I meet right down the street from this location, that they would be ill-advised to even go to this bus station. This is particularly heartrending when we consider that my students are an international crowd of newcomers to our country. Many of them have come here seeking safety, yet I have to warn them not to even go to our bus station. How embarrassing. I have been to bus stations all around the world and they always seem to strike me as an area of safety where the community passes through and meets each other. Only in my own country, in my own city, have I seen a bus station that is truly dangerous. What kind of "shining city on a hill" does this bespeak of?

I knew the lady who was killed. She was homeless living on the beach. Then she moved to live at the terminal. Her name was Dawn. She was very "To herself" when she's not with her buddy Rick.
