BMW X1 2022 CRASH TEST - NICE COMPACT SUV

The X1 is BMW's entry-level crossover, the smallest in its lineup. Still, it nails the basics, starting with its powertrain, a 2.0-liter turbo-4 and 8-speed automatic. It's at home zipping through urban landscapes, and just as familiar on winding roads thanks to its good handling and firm ride.

One downside is that it takes premium gas, but it gets good mileage, EPA rated at 24 mpg city, 33 highway, 27 combined with front-wheel drive; with AWD it drops to 23/31/26 mpg.

The X1 gets five stars in safety from the NHTSA, and the IIHS gives it a top 'Good'? score in most of its crash tests but withholding its top score for the X1's automatic emergency braking system.

Made in Germany, the X1 28i starts at $36,395, and comes standard with power front seats and an 8.8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay. If you want special paint, leather seats, a sunroof, and other things, you'll see the price climb fast. The 28i xDrive with all-wheel drive adds $2,000, and that's about the best deal in options.

There's a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty.
