Improved pedestrian detection boosts BMW X1 to highest IIHS award

Redesigned for the 2023 model year, the BMW X1 meets all the requirements for the 2023 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ award. While the previous generation of the vehicle received no credit in the easier, daytime pedestrian test, the standard front crash system supplied with the 2023 model earns superior ratings in both the daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations.

The environment was dramatically different between the two tests. How can/do you control for those factors and how they impact the pedestrian detection?

I genuinely don’t think the first X1 had the feature, yes it has the high mounted camera but there is no radar located in the bottom grill, and that’s why I think it didn’t work, plus it’s clearly a base model

Seems an impressive improvement, however, the comparisons should be under the same environmental conditions: under the sun or under a tent

The BMW X1 is a Top Safety Pick+ winner indeed. However, his seat belt reminders really need some improvement because they only received a marginal rating.

does that mean if I'm driving towards a carjacker who is pointing a gun at me, I can't run him/her over? (which means I'll be a sitting duck and most likely shot and killed?) ☹

I don't know about you but I think the first design worked better those damn pedestrians get in the way every time

Just wait until a car jacker jumps out in front of you causing your vehicle to stop. While another appears behind you with a cellphone cloning your cellphone because the ordeal has shocked you your not concentrating on your own phone.

Just when you decide to book it and run for your life the AI locks you in your car for your own safety. Your busy mashing the unlock button or trying to roll down your window so you don't notice your car finally unlock from the cellphone behind you and as your car door opens you get the shock of your life as someone pulls you from the car and puts 3 bullets into your heart they do not want a witness

Other than the 100s of pedestrians and other cars passing by who are smart enough to keep their mouths shut and mind their own business.

As you lay dying you may think to appreciate how efficient this theft was and realize how soon they will use your own phone wallet and IDs to transfer the car into their name and empty out your bank accounts
