Actual electrician here. I would recommend always installing next to stud. You can just run some screws through the side of box to secure to stud. If you rely on those ears to hold box the Sheetrock fail over time.

This is OK for access to coax cable and low voltage installations, but the extra strain put on the box by the homeowner when he plugs in stiff plugs is likely to make the box loose over time. Also never forget that the circuit needs to comply with the overload rules, you're only allowed so many boxes and devices on one circuit.

There is no reason to cut out excess drywall. You hardly have any drywall supporting the upper left of the box.

My house is filled with these kind of outlet boxes and they always pull out of the drywall over prolong use of the outlet. I'm not even rough on the outlets. As much as they are easy to install, I would rather cut the drywall, nail them to the stud and repair the wall.

You did not show the where you had to cut the hole again and make it dont have to do that...next time you cut you box you cut it tich to top and bottom of box like you did but then cut a notch in the middle top and bottiom so the screw receiver will have a place to go. usually a v notch will wotk but that box had more a squar so would still be easier. It give you a more solid box fit

Uhh over cut much. First time somebody plugs something in that box is falling inside wall. There's barely and meat to bite at the top guy.

Great tutorial, though it does tend to wear out the drywall over time (or if overtightened) so may be a good idea to word it more "if you don't have a stud near where you need the box" still, live the video, keep up the great work!

Didn't show what mistake he made only opening the" square" 😂 it's more than that see the huge gap he left on top ! And magically the wire is just back there ! Wherever" you want it" make a hole and wires are there! 😂 😂

Please, please, leave the impact driver in the tool box. It is very easy for a weekend worker to over torque and damage screws or threads.

Try a drill/driver on the low torque screw setting. If your hand can activate the clutch, you are less likely to do damage.

If you strip out the plate screw threads, you get to start the whole replacement over.

It's called a Remodel Box for a reason.

You cut the hole to big the box is about to fall in the wall

First things first: Make sure you're not on a stud - or you'll be doing it again and having to make extra holes in the drywall that you'll have to later patch and paint. That can easily turn a ~1hr job into 2 or more

Pro tip - NEVER use a power driver to set the tabs. The average DIYer will strip them or snap them off. ALWAYS use hand tools for this.

I had bad luck using one of those boxes with the plastic Flags, the boxes with the metal Flags are much better, won't strip or break.

Well almost anywhere just make sure there's no stud behind it

How do you meet the requirement that the cable has to be secured within 8 inches of the J-box?
